Need some help with my overclock. i7-2600k @ 4.7GHz so far.

Here are the settings I'm currently at for my overclock:

CPU = 100 bclk x 47 mult = 4.7 GHz
vcore = + .010 offset
LLC = Very High
CPU PLL = 1.700v
DRAM voltage = 1.5v [1600MHz 6-8-6-24-1T]
VCCIO = 1.100v
CPU Overcurrent = 130%
Duty Control = Extreme
Phase Control = Extreme

I am able to pass about 4 hours of Prime95 Blend with no problems. (I know I need to do more, but I wanted to work some other things out first like overclocking the RAM.) However, I keep having a lot of freeze ups in Windows under low load circumstances like installing software. I froze trying to install Windows 7 SP1 and then I tried again and it made it all the way to the computer shutting down and it froze on shutdown. After rebooting it still said SP1 was installed. Multiple other Windows updates are failing still though. I'm starting to get worried however that my OS is becoming corrupted. I already had to reinstall Windows with this overclock once because of a BSOD causing me to be completely locked out. It would just hang on the login screen and wouldn't let me put my password in.

After some research on here I read that having C3 and C6 enabled while using offset voltage can cause idle and low load BSOD. So I disabled these, but I'm still having a lot of OS stability issues. I wanted to continue farther with my overclock, but I need these issues sorted out first. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like maybe the core voltage isn't quite high enough (I am assuming that you're getting 1.368V under load). Is HyperThreading enabled right now?

Try finding your stable clock manually without using offset first. What vcore do you get at load in CPU-Z with .010 offset? I would try switching to manual and use about 1.35 vcore and see if that's stable. You can go up from there if you need more. Then when you find out what vcore you're stable at, you can switch back to offset.

Also, don't overclock your ram until you get a stable OS overclock. Leave it at stock rated timings.

1.368v is under load, hyper-threading enabled. More vcore even though the issues I'm having aren't under load?

Are you doing things that use HT, or can you disable it? Disabling it might improve stability at this core voltage.

Right I wanted to get this sorted out before I moved on, but I didn't want to run a full 12 hours of Prime95 until I get my overclock finished.

I started out using offset vcore because threads I was reading on here said that was the way to go for Sandy Bridge. I'm actually more used to manual voltage because that's the way I've always overclocked AMD processors. I tried going over to manual voltage 1.37v, but that came out to about 1.35ish under load. The OS seemed very unresponsive and glithcy, but didn't completely crash. I just went ahead and stopped it and restarted assuming voltage was too low. That's where I left off at.

I do things that use HT, that's why I ended up getting the 2600k over 2500k.

Do you think I should continue with offset voltage or switch to manual voltage like mgrman suggested?

Also do you think all the crashes during software installations and SP1 will have caused any concern of OS corruption? Or once I get my overclock sorted out should it be ok?

Hmm... I think it's up to you. The only real reason to start with a manual voltage is to just make it easier when adjusting the voltage since you're working with a value you can see as opposed to having to do the math. That way you can get your overclocking done, finalize it by switching to Offset, and then you can be done.

Other than that, it's pretty much the same.

I'm not sure if there is corruption. It's definitely possible. I mean, many people recommend leaving everything at stock until the entire software environment is set up - even when formatting and starting over with an overclock that's known to be stable. Although I personally have never taken it so far as to reverting back to stock from a known stable overclock just to format and start over. However I did wait to begin overclocking with my Sandy Bridge upgrade until I had everything set up and configured just the way I like it.
