Better OC without unlocking 6950?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I was just wondering if my 6950 would overclock higher if i didn't unlock the shaders?? At the moment with shaders unlocked it only overclocks to 900 / 1400 @ 1.15v...anything higher and the driver stops responding.

Should I give it a go switching to normal 6950 BIOS and overclocking higher or am I best sticking with what I already have?

It's pretty easy to switch bioses, so if you're comfortable with the procedure, I'd flash back and see how high you can take it. There are always unknowns when overclocking, and there are a lot of hidden reasons why overclocks may not work.

FWIW I've got 2 6950s unlocked to full 6970 shaders, and can run 900/1375 all day long. I've tried getting over 960 on core, but even with 1.25 it frequently crashes. At 900/1375 though, with unlocked shaders, I've already gotten more than my money's worth out of the cards

Also, you don't really need to push your VRAM, as it will actually start slowing down your performance as ECC kicks in.

Doubt it unless your silicon was defective, which isn't the reason why the shaders were disabled in the first place.

It might ... but in all the reviews & benchmark testing I read up on regarding the 6950's you get the best performance overall from of course DOING BOTH, UnLocking AND OverClocking. In reading around on OCN I've seen people claim that UN-LOCKING gives you anywhere from only a 3% +/- gain all the way up to a 10% gain. When I check the professional reviews & benchmarks, it looks like it's closer to the 10% gain depending upon the card in question. Whereas OVERCLOCKING can yield results of anything from 5-15% gains depending upon the card and your individual GPU Chip of course. So while you MIGHT get a 1-2% {or whatever #} better OC w/o the Shader Unlock, doing BOTH combined can give you around a 20% +/- performance boost, so that's the more important result, not hitting some target MHz number ... but getting the most performance from your card before you reach the instability point of diminishing returns.

Depending on which PowerColor 6950 you have I'd say your #'s while not GREAT, also aren't bad, and it's most likely your GPU can't be pushed much further, you could over volt a little, but that's also how people FRY their PCB boards, so I'd stick with what you got and be happy

I'm going to guess you had a 800/1250 card ... so to get it to 900/1400 ... that's an 11.25% increase on the core clocks, and 12% increase on the Memory Clocks, those are decent boosts.
And then shaders from 1408 unlocked to 1536 ... thats about a 9+% boost on top ... so there's your 20% combined boost ... what MORE do you really want ?

Which PowerColor do you have by the way ?

and did yours have the DUAL BIOS / Switch on it ?

In my experience, unlocked shaders don't affect overclock potential. There's negligible difference in 900MHz core and 950MHz core anyway. I'd say be happy you can at least reach 900MHz.

It doesn't make any difference with either of my cards. Both of mine max at around 1030 core at 1.3v regardless if extra shaders are locked or unlocked. Both of mine are reference models.
