Lenovo x220 or !x220 ?

Thread Starter
Hello OCN, I am looking into purchasing a x220 (from the outlet or on a forums if I can find one with IPS). I want to run Linux (Freebsd or Mint or something) mainly for programming (R/octave/Matlab/java) and for browsing/research and some security testing. Is this a good choice? Any other suggestions?
I looked into the T420s (perhaps but too big/crappy screen), and Sony Z2 (way tooo much) and MBP13(used to have one, trying to get something a little lighter in weight).

Does anyone here have one? Whats your experience with it? Can you recommend a linux distribution?

Thanks.

Don't have a X220, but I have a T410 and I've used X61 and a lot of Thinkpads. The X220 is a solid choice since it has a full-size keyboard, strong build, and it's lightweight. It's not the thinnest though. In terms of usability I think it'd be best (only real negatives being thickness and aesthetics).

As for a Linux Distro, Mint 11. Easily the most user-friendly distro I've used (like last year's Ubuntu, but cleaner). FWIW I've tested out Arch(broke it, as in command-line only after a couple hours, trying to get the proper resolution with INTEL graphics), Ubuntu 10.10/11.04, Peppermint, Fedora, PCLos or w/e, and probably a couple others.

If you want something like a Z, consider a Vaio S. For $1350 it has a 1600x900 screen, AMD graphics, etc. and it weighs 4 pounds, a lot thinner/smaller than a MBP 13. Then there's the MBA 13 if you don't need a lot of CPU speed. Those all are pretty much the extent of good 12.5-13.3" laptops with good displays.
