silly southbridge heatsink compatibility question.

Hello all, I have a weird question lol. Idk why I'm even asking this, but I was curious to know if anyone had an answer for it.

Are heatsinks from different southbridges compatible? Like would I be able to take a heatsink from one of the new x79 southbridges and fit it on to an old x58 board....like Idk the big bang power x

I know there is obvious heatsink clearance issues...but if both had about the same footprint, and both of the mounting screws were in the same exact spot, would it be a simple demount and swap? or are the chips made/sized different thus not allowing this.

Random question I know, but I was just curious.

it varies, but in general as long as the mounting holes are the same it will work. you will need to watch for clearance issues with other components on the motherboard though.
