Cisco Nerds With Cisco Gear!

Thread Starter
Greetings all!

Just as a point of curiosity, anyone else around here running any Cisco routing or switching gear on their home networks?

When I decided I wanted to learn networking and Cisco, I quickly found that simply reading books wasn't going to be good enough to make the material stick. So I decided a good way to make sure I learn IOS was to rely upon it everyday! Went out to eBay, tried to find a nice Cisco router I could use at home and actually afford, and ended up buying a nice 881W ISR (it was actually sold as an 861W, so I got an awesome deal!). Within a few months, I went from having just a basic router and AP setup, to now running DHCP, DNS, and firewall inspection services on the router. With those services running, I peak at about 70% CPU utilization on the router with my 30Mbit Internet connection. cool.gif Currently planning on deploying the newer zone-based policy firewalling and enabling some IPS inspection soon as well.

Anywho, just thought it'd be fun to see what other people are running and how they perform.

I got a cisco 24 port switch and I used to have a cisco router but gave it away 3 years ago (before I realized how expensive and how good it was)

Doing a CCNA course next year cant wait tongue.gif
post #3 of 39
currently i've got an e8400 at the house, and am getting ready to take a CCNA course here in a couple months. might be picking up some more Cisco gear to help everything stick as well smile.gif

I have 3 cisco 2520's and 1 cisco 1760 routers. I bought them to study for the CCNA exam but got bored and stopped studying. I should start up again but there is little motivation.

They sure are expensive on flea bay. I'm actually going for a AS in Cisco networking, might actually pick one of these up if I can find them under 200ish.

I've been trying to find a decent lab kit, but everything is freakin' 10/100. mad.gif

If I could just find a gigabit Cisco switch that didn't cost $400 I'd jump on it. frown.gif

I'm 3/4 of my way through CCNA and gonna finish at the start of next year. The only equipment i have access to is whats in the lab, i was interested in a gigabit switch for home use though.

Had a Linksys/Cisco slimline draft N router, I trashed it after 3 weeks and bought an Asus.

At least their switches work well for me

I have a Cisco 890W as my main router in the house. It is in constant use since it provides the interwebz. I have a slew of Vlans(Testing), ACLs, Inspection Policies, ect. It has a built in Cisco 1252 Access Point that I use for the main wireless in the house.

I had more at the house, but it is all back at the shop now. Have a slew of controllers, routers, switches, AP's, ASA's, WVoIP gear, etc. Don't like having it at home. I would hate to try and claim some of that on my home owners insurance (Companies Gear). Also got it out of the house because I would find my self messing with it in my free time. Which can make it seem like works never ends tongue.gif

Most of the gear is for testing. It's nice to be able to mock up a customers issue, or test out new code before rolling it out into a production environment.

The 890W is more than enough for home right now.

Also, I'm guessing you strictly meant Enterprise Gear. Cisco/Linksys is not Cisco. They just toss there name on it. Not the same R&D or build quality.
