Slush box cooler (dry ice/methanol)

Thread Starter
I have access to free methanol and dry ice, and figured it would be a “cool” idea (get it ‘cool’) to mess around with that stuff to see the results.

I first hooked up a thermaltake radiator at the beginning of the loop before the pump.

I did a test run with ice and water, and the results were not good, I only managed to get the water temperature in the loop down to about 18C from 24C…

Either way I figured I would continue with methanol/dryice,
I replaced all the water in my loop with methanol by simply putting a line into a bottle and let the system flush itself,

Added 8lb of dry ice and methanol into the slush box with the radiator
submerged, picture time

A Little bit of dry ice at the bottom

Thermaltake water temperature sensors, the bottom is disconnected to make room for the slush box radiator, top temperature is a preset warning temp, the bottom is the actual water temp this sensor is located after the Graphics card

Top temp is the CPU core temperature as reported in the bios, this is before the cooling.

Frost everywhere
29939404148_large.jpg

When the core got to -12C I had to stop because there was too much frost building up on the memory.
29939404149_large.jpg

Methanol-dry ice slushy, the temp is about -80C

More frost
29939404151_large.jpg

Nothing got damaged in the experiment, I didn’t think I would get that much frost, but the memory even at 2.5v doesn’t produce enough heat and was the first to get frosty, also the system wasn’t stable when trying to boot into windows, either the graphics card (which got to 4C) or memory have a cold bug.

Next experiment would be a dedicated and insulated loop for the CPU, -40 temps should be a breeze or blizzard…haha

Next time I suggest you use neoprene tubing from Tygon. It's insulated so there wouldn't be as much frost. Insulate the board/memory too with some kind of paste.

Thanks for the tip,
I don’t plan to subzero the memory in the future, I think it has a cold bug, when I booted and tried to run some stress test, I would instantly get a BSOD

The point of insulating it from the rest is so that it doesn't reach sub-zero and cold bug/condensate ^^.

you probably had moisture on the 'fingers' of the RAM or GPU... this will BSOD qwk style.

...and yes...there will be frost...much, so you will need insulation and LOTS of shop towels to catch run-off from the tubing.

This is about 30min after running frozen GPU on slush cooler.. with no vaseline on the fingers of the card you can see moisture build up can happen quickly.

Very cool, What is that putty looking stuff?

Next time will be CPU only as it’s much easier to insulate, my ram and GPU don’t get hot enough to justify subzero cooling.

'putty' = kneedable eraser.. can get at local art supply stores

*use a pizza rolling pin to squish it down into a nice sheet first...then just cur out shapes and press them on to the mobo... very easy and thorough prep. wink.gif
