8GB of RAM is "low?" Low for who? Not even games exceed 4GB.
All the dual channel talk aside, i agree that 4gb is low. I'm sitting at 4gb right now and would really like if i could bump it up to 8gb. Often times i see myself reaching around 90% ram usage, and by then i start to notice performance problems.

Albeit, i do more than just gaming, but i think with all the multitasking people do today 4gb is quite low.

@OP
just stick with kits designed for SB... they will either be 8GB or 16GB as a general rule... if you get RAM any faster than 1600MHz (with is unecesary for u IMO), then make sure it is all one kit (ex. dont get 2x 2133MHz 8GB kits cause it is likely they wont work together)... good luck on your build

There's also 2 4GB DIMM's and 2 2GB DIMM options as well. If not, you could go with 16GB, but if you just game, 12GB is fine. I have 32GB of RAM for my next build so I do not run out and get horrid performance. My laptop runs with 6GB of RAM in it. Whenever I play a game, ~75 - 80% of the RAM is being used.

That is true... But 8 is a whole neather story... Most programs that use ram aren't adative in their usage.... The more u do, the slower it starts to raise... 8GB should be plenty, but by all means get 16GB if you would like... My next build will be 32GBs or more

Stop just thinking about how many slots there are on the mobo... Running 3 sticks of ram will degrade ur gear (CPU, mobo, and ram)... You laptop is probably a last gen i7 that has triple channel allowing for 6 GB configurations... Plz make sure u have all ur facts straight before you post (or just simply say that u rnt sure)

@op... If u get 8 GBs of ram, get a 2x4GB kit (cause I would assume u won't be majorly OCing ur ram)

I use at least 5GB in most games, 1920x1080.

People used to recommend 4GB when RAM prices were high and games weren't demanding, but 'the game has changed'. RAM is cheap and games are hungry for more.

I'd pick up at least 8GB.

I'd pick up at least 8GB, it's not even about being on the safe side, it's just not worth buying 4GB when 8GB is pennies more.

Sry... Let me clear up my statement... I would recommend getting a 2 stick 8GB set of 1600mhz ram... It is cheap and performs well... What I said before was simply to show the fact that 16GB is unnecessary for most people... Sorry about the confusion there

I did stop. Why you so mad? And can't you read. Go re-read my post, and apologize. No, I have 6GB of RAM (2 DIMM's) cause in reality, you have different sized DIMM's. Go do your research and do not insult people when they are smarter than you.
For 12 GB you can use 4 and 2 sticks of RAM as well. Do your research.

I'm not mad at all except for ur tone... Lap top ram is another story... I'm sorry that I was wrong about what kind or memory u have in ur lap top... I would be very greatful though for u to link me to some good and high quality sets of 12GB ram that use either 2 or 4 sticks (no 3 or 6 stick sets)... I sure don't know of any... And it is a majorly bad idea to only half fill a channel

It's called 4 DIMM's (2x 2GB 2x 4GB). That's how companies pulled off 3GB in computers a few years ago (2x 512MB and 2x1GB)
