Stuck in Low Power 3D Mode

Thread Starter
I have an EVGA GT240 512mb GDDR5 ref card.

Lately when I'm playing Black Ops or Modern Warfare 1, the screen will freeze. That's when it goes into low power 3d mode. I have to terminate the process. My card is now stuck at 405MHz low power 3d mode until I restart.

The temps don't even hit 60c and I know my card is safe at least until 80c.

My CPU is an Intel E6300 stock 1.86GHz and I have a 500w power supply. It must be getting enough power. The computer came with a 350w when I bought it and my card doesn't have an auxiliary power connector so I'm guessing it used as much as the old card which means I should be safe at 350w but I have 500w.

I do have OSD monitoring from Precision enabled but it's also done this with the OSD and Precision completely off and on stock clocks. My card is only about 56c usually and about 60% gpu usage in COD4. I can't figure out why it goes into low power 3d mode.

Help would be appreciated,
- Joe.

Have you set the power management mode to 'Prefer maximum performance' in the nvidia control panel? This keeps the clock stable and doesn't throttle it down.

XP doesn't have that option.

Also, the problem seems to go away with the Steam overlay disabled.
I'll have to do some more testing with Overlay disabled and Precision running, and other stuff.

Ok so the problem still happens. I had the overclock enabled but overlay and precision were closed/disabled.

I had the same problem with a GTX260 two years back.

It was a problem with newer drivers and I wasn't able to find a workaround and honestly I didn't bother much since I had other cards.

Are you sure that your GPU overclock is stable? Try using stock clocks.

It must be the overclock. I've only tested cod4 though. I need to test black ops too.

I two issues here;

1. Dell platform
2. COD for bench

Now, i could never get anything to ever go smooth on my parents dell. its all locked and anti-OC. special ram needs to be used, special cards and what not. i suggest moving to windows 7 and building a new platform. but! for the time being, put it slower than stocks clocks using Riva tuner. lock the settings, save them for reboot and check off override performance mode.

restart and let us know
