disappointing ?

for enthusiasts on desktop maybe, and because proper software support for its instruction sets/optimizations are not here.

for server market, which is a market that MUCH more money changes hands by top tier chips being sold, dozer is already a winner with its multi-thread performance. 16 core/module dozer is already out to server manufacturers if im not mistaken. and before the year is out, there will be 20 core/module dozer.

there is a reason why they are renovating the #3 supercomputer of the world with opteron chips. and when the renovating completes, it will become #1 supercomputer again.

of course, server market has much better multithreading. servers run predominantly on open source, and open source software is generally very well threaded.

that seems to be making the major performance difference in between desktop and the server market.

I have no problem using Bulldozer as long as they drop the price. A FX 4100 for $89 bucks it appealing to me

The biggest failure was marketing. The second biggest failure is a lack of intelligence and appreciation of context on the side of consumers (which gets back to marketing). No one wants to sit and comprehensively read through reviews. They like to see colorful bar charts and draw unsubstantiated uneducated conclusions from them, despite no correlation between the bar chart results and actual real-world performance.

BD is a fine processor, especially for people outside of the computer hardware enthusiast community. Lots of real-world benchmarks (synthetics are meaningless) have shown it can keep up just fine with current offerings, and even surpass it (in some instances). Not high-end offerings like 2600k, but if you're not in the computer hardware enthusiast community, you wouldn't be considering that anyway.

My gf does a lot of multitasking, running virtual machines for environment testing for work, lots of photoshop work, and to be honest, the fx-8120 (or 50) is much more appealing than getting a 2600 or 2600k.

Hey, I hope you're right--but there are a few problems with your supposition.

1) Upgrading a system isn't the same as high-profile design wins, particularly considering that vendors typically make such chips available for free (or offer them at steep discounts). TOP 500 is a tiny niche of a tiny niche (4P) and AMD's server share has eroded badly in recent years.

2) AMD's upcoming server chips won't scale as well as standard multi-core parts. That was the trade-off the company made with Bulldozer. Even if the penalty is just 10%, it means your 16-core Interlagos chips are more likely to resemble a 14-core Magny-Cours.

3) I can't claim to have advance knowledge of Interlagos performance, but no one at AMD or anywhere else is running around behind the scenes whispering "Wait until you see server performance."

Let me be clear on this point. I *want* BD to have a case scenario AMD can point to as proof that the architecture really can deliver. I want to see AMD earn more cash, because more money means a greater ability to innovate and compete with Intel. I firmly believe that competition benefits consumers far more than one-sided horse races.

But nothing about BD suggests that server workloads are made from pixie dust.

Turning off turbo core hurts the AMD chip more than it hurts the Intel chip. Anyway Extremetech hasn't put out an article worth reading in a long time.

Please produce the workloads that show Zambezi as a more attractive choice than either Thuban (at $189) or the the 2600 / 2600K. As a reviewer, I'd very much like to see them, particularly since lightly-threaded workloads are Zambezi's weakest point. Please keep in mind, the X6 1100T is just $189 compared to a list price of $245 for Zambezi (the few chips on the market are priced more around $280).

This has been bugging me quite a bit, why did they add such an enormous amount of L2 cache on the die?

Most Intel-processors have been moving towards a larger L3, while keeping L2 small and fast. AMD did the same with K10
