Looking for a good boom mic for headphone mod

Thread Starter
After much deliberation and teeth gnashing, I finally decided to order a set of JVC HA-RX900's. I may have gone with the 700's instead, but NewEgg was sold out. Using NEWCUSTOMER10 brought the 900's down pretty close to the 700's though.

Now I'm looking for a decent boom mic to mod it with. I don't know that I want to do anything invasive just yet, so something inexpensive that I can strap or velcro to the side would be best. I looked up the Labtec unit that some have used, but I'm not looking to spend $50 on it. eek.gif

Suggestions?

Does it have to be a boom mic? A desk mic would be quite good too.

I considered a desk mic, but, never having used one, I wasn't sure if I would like it or if it would provide the same speech quality as a boom mic set near my face.
It always bugs me to hear someone key in on game chat with a lot of ambient background noise.

I've used these in the past. Build quality is nothing stellar, plastic around the mic feels cheap, but the price is right. Shipping from this place takes forever though; about a month.

That looks like what I may end up going with. I found a couple of domestic sellers for those on eBay.

Thanks.

I just upgraded from a clip on mic to this one:[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-981-000246-USB-Desktop-Microphone/dp/B002RL84OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319565995&sr=8-1"]http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-981-000246-USB-Desktop-Microphone/dp/B002RL84OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319565995&sr=8-1[/ame]
The quality it provides to others in mumble is very good. A few people were actually creeped out by how clear my voice was, like I was in the room with them. So I would recommend that over a boom mic. And, you don't have to mod your headphones and the USB mic can stay with you wherever you go.

How are you using that mic, CarFreak? I have the same one but am unable to use it because it picks up anything and everything. Least of all my voice, oddly enough. My keyboard strokes, creaky chair, mouse clicking, a car honking two blocks down, all of these are relayed to my friends with excellent, truly stellar, audio quality. But that's not what I want my mic to do, so it's just sitting there, unused.

I just plugged it in and it worked. People can hear my A/C in the background, but my voice is much louder than it. I didn't configure anything, so I'm not really sure what to say. My other friend has the same mic and I can hear his keyboard sometimes (it's a Deck) and his chair sometimes, but it's not really annoying to me.

I am going thru the same dilemma as I just ordered the exact same headset. Here is the boom I was considering:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Flexible-Microphone-Laptop-Skype/dp/B00284VD02/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1319570741&sr=8-8"]Amazon.com: Mini 3.5mm Flexible Microphone for PC/Laptop/Skype: Electronics[/ame]

How much better is it going to sound with a boom compared to the standard clip-ons that most people recommend such as:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ"]Amazon.com: Zalman Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone: Electronics[/ame]

and this other which I just found:

Maybe my friends just have a low threshold when it comes to annoying sounds in the background or something. This is what it sounds like, although I'm just humming loudly here instead of actually talking.
