I agree with Danker. What volume do you have your ipod at?

I agree with Danker. What volume do you have your ipod at? 50w should be more than enough to power those speakers.

*edit AH so it is the forum screwing up with double posts...

I tried what he said and lowered the volume to around 25% on the ipod. I had to raise the volume on the amp almost all the way to compensate for the lowered ipod volume. The result was it sounded like sh*$. 50watt is definitely enough to power the speakers, it's just when I want to listen to them loud the instruments and vocals sound muffled. When I have the volume turned down to around 30-40% everything sounds perfect. Does this make sense to anyone else or was the guy from polk audio blowin smoke up my butt? When I googled under powering I got the same response from the polk tech..

also, they are rear ported...so if you have the backs too close to a wall, that can definitely make them sound muddy

Yes, if you've got something with higher power (like a receiver), try the M40's on that. And try some lesser power speakers (if you have any) off the Dayton amp.

And gorb is also right on the rear port thing, I forgot completely that they were rear ported. If they're close to a wall, pull them away a bit, and see if that helps.

Today I finally got a chance to hook my system up to my sound card. Put on some Alan Parsons Project and....woooahhhh. What a difference in sound quality. Then I moved the speakers away from my wall(the backs of them were flush with the wall...). My music finally sounds perfect. Thanks guys, +rep to all : )
