Upgrade Pentium 4

Thread Starter
Any recommendations of processors for me to upgrade to? I want a dual core of some sort and it needs to be a socket 775 processor. Thanks in advance

Side question: Is overclocking a pentium 4 with stock cooling only safe? If so how do I do it as there is nothing in the BIOS that I can find?

blast from the past right ere. assuming that P4 system is that prebuit e-machines, you probably can't overclock it at all.
I wouldn't overclock with a stock cooler. The stock cooler should be looked at for running stock speeds, only. Once you start increasing the multiplier or bus, the temperature of the cpu can skyrocket rather quickly. What might be say, 32c on stock clocks, and volts can quickly reach 60-70c. With a plethora of inexpensive aftermarket cooling solutions available, I wouldn't even bother using it unless it's all you have.

Link to some cheep procs, starting under $20

What are you looking to do with it? For gaming, this was a nice overclockable chip for its day. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

Problem is, try to find a used one. You can get a brand new 2500K Sandy Bridge chip from microcenter for the same price.

If you want a dual core ,then you'll have to upgrade motherboard, videocard, cpu and memory.

If your motherboard has a P4 in it, I doubt it supports dual cores. On that note, you'd be better off just building a new rig instead of trying to upgrade that one. It'll end up costing you just as much in the long run just trying to upgrade that rig.

I've upgraded the video card and the memory, probably never touching the mobo though. What is the best CPU you think my setup can handle?
