Fans, a fan controller, an optimization!

Thread Starter
Hey, guys.

I've got a few questions about my air-cooling setup... some questions about the fans themselves, some questions about potential fan controllers, and a question about optimization.

====== Fans ======

Okay, so my case is a HAF X, which has quite a large number of fan slots.

Note that this rig is strictly air-cooling only... I don't want to mess with water cooling, since it scares me.

I'm sure I could stick with only the default fans and be fine, but I figure that since I'm dumping a lot of money in it to begin with, I might as well spend a little more and improve the cooling system.

Side Note: I'm planning on getting a Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler.

The HAF X has the following fan slots:

-Front: 230 x 30 mm red LED on/off fan x 1
-Top: 200 x 30 mm fan x 2 (one optional)
-Side: 200 x 30 mm fan x 1
-Rear: 140 x 25 mm fan x 1
-VGA Fan Duct: 120 x 25 mm or 120 x 38 mm fan x 1 (optional)
-VGA Holder: 80 x 15 mm fan x 1 (optional)

I'm assuming it would be best to take out all of the default fans and replace them with top-end ones (I'm pretty sure the default fans are the various ones in the R4 family). I'm actually really inexperienced with this kind of thing, but this is what I've been thinking so far:

Front (230mm): I can't think of any 230mm fans, so I may have to stick with the default one here.
Top (200mm) x2: Same thing goes with these 200mm fans. Cooler Master R4 family fans, I guess.
Side (200mm): Same as Top 200mm.
Rear (140mm): R4 family/Scythe Kaze... or maybe a Noctua 140mm, but I think Noctua fans are ugly.
VGA Fan Duct (120x38 mm): San Ace fans here, maybe. I hear they're pretty beastly. Not actually sure whether a 38mm or a 25mm fan would be best here.
VGA Holder (80mm): Maybe a Scythe fan.

As you can see, I need a lot of help... I'm kinda clueless.

====== Fan Controller ======

I'm not sure if I need a fan controller, but I figure that if I'm going to be getting high-quality fans, I probably will.

I'm not really sure what to look for in fan controllers, but I've looked into Rheobus and Lamptron FCs so far.

Could I get some recommendations, please? It doesn't have to be fancy, but bonus points for awesome designs.

====== Optimization/Fan Setup ======

As I mentioned above, I have a HAF X case and am planning on filling all the slots and am getting a Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler.

Side Note: I'm also planning on getting some DEMCiflex dust filters.

That said, I have no idea which fans should be set to intake and exhaust.

I found this picture, and have been planning on copying it, but I really don't know if it's any good.

Note that this is *not* my picture! I don't have an H70 Cooler.

computer02b.png

What do you guys think?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

Seems like a nice config, exept that pulling air from top thing. You will fill the case with dust in matter of minutes. Make sure you have some decent filters on.

edit: I too don't like Noctua fans.

If you convert the top fans, then yes, this will work perfect, itll also give you positive pressure so less dust. Although i agree with getting better dust filters for the top vent.

Also, water cooling shouldn't scare you, think of it as basic plumbing tongue.gif but the Haf X has alot of potential so stick with what your comfy with now, then in the future if you ever change your mind, the HafX can accommodate a 360 Radiator where the 200mm top fans go, and a 140mm radiator.

for fans, just get some with high CFM, dont have to worry too much about static pressure now because you dont have a rad. (youll need them for your NH-D14 though if you ever want to change the fans)

yes, noctua fans are ugly (i have a NF-P14 in my case) but their super high quality, and their very silent for the amount of air they move.

Yeah, I'm getting these DEMCiflex dust filters.

I hear they're pretty amazing.

I have a HAF X and I have fans in all of the slots except that I didn't use the VGA shroud or VGA holder so I don't have fans for those.

I kept my top two as exhaust instead of intake and I get very good temps (in my opinion) with my Noctua NH-D14 over the CPU. Idles at 27-29C and goes up to 66-68C on full load.

I also added another 120mm cooler master fan in the bottom three 5.25" slots on the HAF X and it really helps with the airflow through the case.

I got the Rheosmart fan controller and love the PWM control that it offers. Most of my fans are 3-pins and therefore can't be controlled via PWM directly from the motherboard but by hooking the fans all up to the Rheosmart and then hooking the Rheosmart up to a CPU sensor on the motherboard, all of the fans in my system are able to be speed controlled depending on CPU temperature.

If you look in my signature, there's quite a few pics of my rig. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! smile.gif

Great set up! I also use top intake, positive pressure gives great temps and much less dust than a negitive/even pressure set up will. great work man!

blue ring is the side panel fan
yes its a bit dusty but i first need a dustvac frown.gif

i had a similar idea, using the vga either to pull the incoming air from the front through the hdd´s to the back of the case

i am using all stock coolers + another cm 200 in the top

26102011362.jpg

changed my case airflow completely and got much better temps now, idle 23° (lowest 21°) and gaming between 35°-39° (celsius)

i added a fan to the 5.25 array using foam like i saw it ehume did in an old thread.

That's a pretty sexy fan controller. Can I only monitor one fan at a time, though (looking at their photos)?

And could I get some opinions on the actual fans themselves, too, since everything else has been pretty much covered?
