HTPC: Integrated vs. Dedicated? - Page 2

I'd go with a dedicated. I have a i3 and 1080p video would stutter with the intergrated gpu, after an upgrade to an ATI 5450 it plays fine. Or you could go with the dedicated video from one of th enewer AMD chips.

The card I have is a pretty good HTPC card. Its low profile, low power, HDMI out, super quite for active cooling. A gt240 or 220 is a good for nVidia. I don't use it for such uses though. A 5450, 5570, gt220, 240, maybe a hd4350. All good HTPC cards. I recommend dedicated graphics for whatever the reason.

Just to add my 2cents.gif, I use the original Core i3 in my HTPC and have not encountered any issues playing 1080p rips, running my tuner card, or playing back Blurays for the 2 disks I did play using PowerDVD trial. as Duckieho pointed out, videofiles will want a discrete card for better calibrations and a few minor video issues like 24p bluray playback which annoy some and don't effect others. Most of the time when I did have video playback issues it was codec related or not having the correct codecs. Properly set up I do not see why integrated SB i3 graphics cannot support video playback of anything. I say save yourself the $30-40 and build it without the graphics card. If after installing windows, or whatever OS you plan on using, it is not working as well as you had hoped then add in the discrete card.

If you do plan on getting a discrete card, a quick Google search will help as i know several places review specifically for HTPC cards. a year ago I would have said go with AMD because they had bitstreaming and better video quality, but last I checked Nvidia caught up and possibly surpassed so I am not sure what is king of the hill now. I would try to find one with a passing cooler because it won't be working to hard to play video and you don't want to add more noise to the system than you have to.

I have a 9800gt in my htpc. That's because I had it laying around. That being said, I have built quite a few htpc's. I have built several on the first generation i3 and never had a problem with 1080p playback. If I did, it was always codec related. Once the codecs got figured out everything was golden. I have anlso built a few with the new sandy bridge. Never had a single problem.

You know best part in integrated gpu? You can just buy discrete afterwards if it won't suffice smile.gif
On a side note, may i ask why HTPC? I personally think Media streamers are much better for that purpose.

Does the IGPU offer bitstreaming (believe so with SB?), thats one thing the 5xxx series cards offer and I used with my AVR.
i3 SB will have bitstreaming I am sure because my older i3 has bitstreaming. I would guess Lanno does as well if you went that route. Just a side note for bluray playback expect to drop about another $100 for software as there is no free solution. Two software players I am aware of are Total Media Theater and PowerDVD and both integrate into MediaCenter
