Pointless to get 60+ FPS on a 60hz monitor?

Thread Starter
My question is in the title. I have a monitor that is 60Hz. I was getting stuttering in BF3 so I enabled Vsync which locks my FPS to my screen, at 60 FPS. Do I need a better screen to get over 60 FPS and not stutter?

Stutter or 'tearing'?
Next upgrade is 120hz which I doubt 1 570 will do in BF3... and much more expensive and probably won't be worth it. Keep the 60hz monitor if you manage a good 60FPS and can deal with whatever input lag V-Sync is adding...

Do you have the latest drivers installed? Somehow I doubt this would be a monitor-related issue..

Are you playing in dual-monitor mode? Or just a single one?

I guess, I mean my 19" syncmasters don't stutter from 40fps to 600fps (Crysis 1 menus) so I don't exactly think it your monitor per say, it may be a graphics setting. Possibly your graphics card is trying to get higher FPS than it can handle and is stuttering as a result so artificially locking it at 60 keeps it from going too high.

I do plan to get another 570 for SLI. I did not get the new drivers from nvidia because it looks like a lot of people are having problems with them. Just wondering: is it pointless to have 60+ fps on a 60 HZ monitor or is there a difference between 70 fps vs 100 fps on a 60hz mintor?

if you have a 60hz monitor...the difference between getting 60 fps vs 200 fps in-game is absolutely 0% (with vsync). that is why people are buying 120hz monitors...so they have make the game "feel" smoother with a higher fps limit/cap. IMO, its dumb to spend a lot of money on graphic cards pushing anything over way over 60 fps in modern games...if your monitor is capped at 60hz (60fps).

The 120hz monitor can display 120 fps a second...so if you can get 60+fps in-game...it will look better on a 120hz than on a 60hz monitor (60fps limit/cap).

Now a days you either need to turn down graphics (with 1 mid-range gfx card) or get SLI/CF to get 60+ fps on new modern games...that is why some people recommend getting dual graphic cards (CLI/CF) with 120hz monitors...so you can push enough fps to make the most use out of the 120hz monitor. Though, 120hz will always feel smother than 60hz regardless of graphic card/s (or same fps).

Its funny...if you buy an expensive 120hz monitor..it kind of makes you want to spend more money on graphic cards as well (SLI/CF) - and vise verse. Arg, I hate that!

It can be advantageous to run games above your monitors max frequency, it's kind of like a manual V-sync except that it doesn't get rid of graphical errors and you have to turn things down to achieve the framerate (I never liked SSAO to begin with, and AA is overrated). I often find that aiming in games is significantly more "snappy" when the engine is running at a higher FPS (Just Cause 2 being a prime example), you also get a buffer for the framerate to dip into before you see a drop.

BTW I highly recommend getting a 120hz monitor. It's hard to find a good one (stay away from "gaming" monitors), but the buttery smoothness is definitely worth it.

I remember reading an article back in the 1.6 days where people were trying to figure out rates. I've grown up thinking that fps relates to data transfer between the server and you along side with gpu/cpu/monitor relations.

That aside, I don't like vsync it makes me feel "heavy". Everything just moves and feels differently.

the difference in the FPS above 60 is how smooth the picture looks. You cant really tell the difference in frames but the human eye can TOTALLY see the difference in how smooth a picture is rather than choppy. Its more important to get quality graphics cards and just have a 60Hz monitor.

I have highend graphics cards so i just play with vsync off for newer games. hope this helped
