Got Some Cooling Questions For Everyone

I recently bought my case and will be slowly piecing my system together over the next couple of months. Heres a link to my case.... It's a Lian Li PC-A70F

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112342

It's got dual 140mm fans in the front and two 120mm fans in the back. I will be installing either a i5 2500k or i7 2600k and probably using a megahalem with a push/pull configuration on it. That will give me a total of 6 fans. Heres my questions for ya..

Would i need a fan controller for all 6 or just the fans on my processor.

Should i replace the case fans with better fans?

I just want to make sure my case is being cooler properly. Thanks everyone!!

How many fan connectors does your motherboard support? I assume it'll have at least two, one for the CPU and one for the rear/top exhaust fan.

As for the other case fans you have, I imagine you will need a controller if you plan on moving a lot of air.

I don't have a motherboard yet so i couldn't give you an answer on the fan connectors.

well, for clarification. a fan controller will only down-speed a fan. so no it is not required by any means, but if you want the potential of a bunch of high rpm fans to run silently some time then a controller would be necessary. I currently am using x5 gentle typhoons on a x4 controller splicing the x2 120 exhaust onto one channel, slower speeds, but even at 1/2 the fans would run at 900 rpm which is plenty for a typhoon.

Edit: another benefit of a fan controller is to create more access points for a 3 pin connector other than your mobo, but most fans come with a molex adapter so you can just run it strait off the psu...

1. While you do not necessarily need a fan controller, I would hook up as many fans as possible to it within specs. If you cannot hook up certain fans due to lack of fan controller inputs/cable length/etc... I would at least keep the Push/pull on the processor at the same speeds. Any other fans on the controller are just a bonus. Just know that if nothing is plugged into the CPU_FAN pin on the Mobo, you will have to disable a BIOS setting that reads if the CPU fan is spinning.

2. The fans included in that case should be fine. As far as performance goes, you will spend $20-$50 on fans to replace them only to increase performance very slightly in most cases. Only replace the fans if you are after every last bit of performance or you find that the stock case fans are too loud (shouldn't be a problem with a fan controller).

That case probably comes with a simple fan controller.

Here is my two choices for motherboards...

The AsRock for its great reviews and the Asus for reviews and honestly I like the way it looks.

So pretty much I should just plug it all into my mobo? Or just the case fans and control the CPU cooler fans?

Out of those 2, go with the Sabertooth if you like the looks more. Both of those should do just about whatever you want them to do, plus the Sabertooth has a 5yr. warranty vs the ASRock 2yr warranty.

As for the fan question, it is entirely up to you. Will that case provide sufficient cooling? Yes. Will it be too loud for your liking? That is up to you. You could always try running them with their Molex connections running them at 100% and seeing if they are too loud for your tastes. If they aren't too loud, I would leave them be. But if they are, throw the fan controller on them.

In my case, I was absolutely fine running 6 case fans (4x120, 2x140) at full speed. When the computer first starts up, I notice it, but block it out after Windows boots.

I think i just changed my mind about air cooling my cpu. Probably gonna go with a Corsair H80 or H100.

First, get the Sabetooth.

Second DONT GET THOSE COOLERS!!!!

If you want the H80, the D-14/Silver arrow are much better! if your looking at the H100 for the same price you can get a RASA water loop going!
