SSD - Some questions

Thread Starter
Hi, i bought the Corsair Force 3 GT 120 Gb SSD, and i just have some questions that i hope you guys can answer for me, please!

First of all, i want to know that if necessary some day, is there any problem on formating the SSD? If there is no problem, do i need any tools or just boot from the dvd and let the windows format it?

I have my system running already, OS installed on the ssd, what about some tweaks to increase its speed?

I saw some stuff around the internet, and i disabled file indexing on the SSD and on my HDD also. I changed the pagefile size to 1000mb-1000mb (also on the SSD), and i removed system restore and defrag schedule options.

Does it seems ok? Or should i change anything else? Thanks!

So you installed windows already?

also you should leave at least 164 mb of free unformatted space on the SSD for it to use as caching

I installed windows already.

Also i have a second HDD (1Tb), currently empty.

The only thing i did was installing windows on it (on the SSD), setting it's page file to 1000mb-1000mb, and i disabled file indexing on the SSD, HDD, and on the 100mb partition that windows create on the installing.

And i removed the defrag schedule, and system restore.

You asked if i installed windows already, is that ok? Should i've done anything before that or am i good?

I asked if i can format the SSD normally because i'm kinda addicted to format the HDD from time to time, so is that fine or will i lose performance or damage the thing?

No....
1) SSDs don't cache in NAND.
2) 164MB is insignificant.
3) SSD will use all space as spare area partitioned or not.

Ok,

Why do you need to format it though? I wouldn't just randomly format it for no reason. Only if I was installing windows I would. And in that case I would just follow the guide I linked you. And yes you do wear your drive out a little every time.

Boot from the Windows 7 installation DVD
When you see the "Install now" button, click "Repair your computer"
You'll see a little window named "System Recovery Options" appear that searches for Windows installations.
When it finishes, you will see a dialog box. Select "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair.", and then click Next.
Click "Command Prompt"
Type diskpart to load DiskPart
Type list disk
Type select disk 0 (or whichever number your SSD gets)
If you want to be sure you have the right one selected, then type list partition.
Once you know you have the right drive selected, type clean.
Type create partition primary align=1024
Type format quick fs=ntfs
It will appear like it's going to take forever, but then like 5-10 seconds later, it suddenly finishes, jumping straight from 0% to 100%.
Type active
Type list partition to see your creation.
Type exit
Type exit
Click Restart
Boot from the DVD again and perform a normal installation using the "Custom (advanced)" type of installation.

That seems quite a bit excessive.
I'll let someone else chime in on this one, but it's an SSD, why bother with a page file? I removed mine completely.

Because you don't need to keep every page in main memory all the time and some programs require a paging file.

What you have done sounds about right. If you follow the guide that was linked by Sean Webster, (enabling AHCI in both Bios and Registry), you should feel some sort of an increase in performance.
In order to check if it's actually working, you could use something like Soluto (an anti-frustration software that helps you with faster start ups and so on. ) to check that it's actually working.

I've ran two SSD's already and I've always used an old SSD optimization guide with both of them and never had an issue. One is a Intel X-25M and the other is a Corsair Force GT.
