With all that going on, the life expectancy of those wouldn't seem like much. Too much could go wrong with those.

surround sound headphones are marketing BS. its not real. IMO get the beyerdynamic dt-770 pro-80 headphones and a buttkicker for your chair, and you will be blown away by the awesomeness.

oh yeah, make sure you have a sound card/amp that can drive the headphones. the xfi titanium works well enough, though id love to see what a dedicated headphone amp could do.

gogo.

For 400 dollar limit, he could buy Beyerdynamic DT880s and use the rest for an amp like an Fiio e9 or whatever.

Most likely, i was talking to a friend about surround headsets and imo no way to replace a true 5.1 or 7.1 system with a pair of headsets. Even tho he swears they are awesome :/

He asked for Senn or Bose, obviously anyone with a peanut sized brain would not recommend Bose, HD800 is out of his price range so HD650 is the best choice for something he's familiar with.

"or whatever you guys feel is superior within my budget [Smiley Face]"

And it's not at all the best choice, especially considering that he's wanting gaming here.

On top of that he needs an amp for the HD650s and buying those leaves little to no room for an amp.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, but Simca's suggestion is by far unchallenged, and I think I'll go with this once I understand a few things.

What exactly is the function of this amp? Why do I need it, say, as opposed to replacing an Op-Amp on the card, as is commonplace? What would happen if I plugged the DT880 directly into the headphone jack on my sound card?

EDIT: Edited OP- stating my current headphones are the JVC HA-RX900.

To provide adequate voltage (for high impedance headphones) so the drivers function properly. Think of it as a performance car on a track requiring high octane fuel. If you under power it by feeding it inadequately, performance suffers. The analogy applies here. Both are mechanical engineering
The advantage with high impedance headphones is better matching with sources with high output impedance and lower distortion and noise floor.

Opamps are different.

I'd go Fiio E9 + beyerdynamic DT880 / DT990 tbh.

Ok that makes a lot of sense So with the FiiO E9 amp, will I connect it to my sound card with a 3.5mm male-to-male, and then plug the DT880 into the amp, or will I connect the amp to the sound card via RCA?
