IPS or 120hz monitor?

I'm looking at getting a new monitor, not that mine is old I just got it at the begining of the year. I'm looking at getting some better picture and color acurracy and I don't think what I have is that. I wasn't very informed when I bought my current monitor, so now I'm looking at a dell u2312hm ips monitor or maybe a 120hz monitor. which would benefit me more for gaming while still give me a good picture? I haven't looked into any 120hz monitors so suggestions would be welcome.

You have GTX 580 SC in SLI....you are a gamer...you will be cranking out very high fps (80+ in most modern games)......def. get a 120hz...no brainer imo (unless you are heavy into photography/photo editing).

Get the Samsung S23A750 (overall best 120hz monitor imo; glossy screen) if you have a displayport on your GTX 580 (i think you should). It's $399 right now: http://www.buy.com/prod/samsung-sync...223430190.html

If you don't have a displayport on your graphic card get the S23A950 (normally $450). If you're budget is $550+..and you want a 27" get either the S27A750 or S27A950

If you don't want to spend more than $300 or so..get the Asus VG236HE (glossy screen). If you don't like glossy screens..get the Planar SA2311W (matted screen), which is also about $300.

FYI - this is coming from an IPS owner (HP zr24w), but I only have 1xGTX 570 (im not normally going to get 60+ fps on modern games)...currently thinking of picking out a S23A750 for dual monitors...even though it would be most beneficial for me to have SLI...but im anti-SLI. lol...catch 22.. I want 120hz..but I don't want SLI/CF.

/end of thread.

Hey thanks guys. I'm going to look into your suggestions. I have no interest in 3D so ill scratch that of the list. I'm trying to keep to a $300 budget for the monitor.

Malikq86, why do you say to get that monitor "if" he has display port? I'm also looking into getting a monitor in the near future. Is display port superior to hdmi? Not quite understanding why you would recommend the monitor only if he has display port.

I was going to suggest IPS. If you're easily spoiled, you'll start to hate every other monitor once you've gone 60+. That was my thinking with my purchase anyway.

you need a displayport OR dvi to get 120hz...hdmi can't do 120hz. the 750 series only has hdmi and display port...the 950 series has hdmi, displayport, and dvi.

im glad you made up your mind OP..i currently have IPS and its awesome, but probably going to grab a 120hz soon as well.

120hz is nice but 1080p is too low.
I came from a 120hz 23" and used to think it was better for gaming until I started gaming at 2560 X 1600. Makes 1920 X 1080 look silly.

If you can lock games at 60FPS at 2560 X 1600, get the IPS.
