need tips; shopping for a GTX 570/580

Thread Starter
i'm mainly looking for a gpu with lower fan noise and decent stock cooling, any suggestions?

also, i'd say $500 is my absolute max. i want to get opinions on a 570. how does a 570 compare to crossfire 6870s ?

I have the Asus DirecCU II 570 and it's very quiet @ idle and load. Doesn't hit 70'C with an overclock of 930core.

Your 6870's will definitely be faster than a 570, at least on par with a 580 also if not faster in some games. I wouldn't bother changing video cards unless you are having crossfire issues.

2 used 570s should land you in the ballpark of 500. Don't know if you want to keep with a multicard config, but there was a review a while back showing 460s vs 6870s for microstuttering and the 460s won by a landslide. However, I don't know how much that applies to the rest of nvidia's cards in SLI.

Your 6870's in crossfire are a very nice combo, and could last you awhile if you could avoid the "upgrade bug." According to benchmarks, your 6870's will outperform a GTX 580 in almost every game (source). However, if you really want to go single GPU with a quite fan, I would very much recommend the Galaxy GTX 580. It will perform well, and comes with the Arctic Cooling Xtreme Plus II cooler preinstalled. Probably the best cooler on the market right now. Just be warned that it will take up 3 slots. The second best I would say is the Direct CU II 580 by Asus (which also takes up 3 slots...see a trend?).

Galaxy 580.
Direct CU II 580.

I would have highly recommended the GTX 580 Lightning by MSI, but if you want a quiet GPU, this is definitely not for you.
