So just for fun, I tried UNDERclocking

I know, I know, we are here to overclock. But hear me out.
I tried underclocking my 990X, with some interesting (and kind of obvious, predictable results)
Starting from stock at 3.47Ghz, I lowered the multiplier by one each time, and did benchmarks. The benches decreased basically linearly, as you would expect. I got it all the way down to 2.39 Ghz (multiplier of 18). Any lower than that and the system wouldn't boot. Interesting.
As would be expected, temps were way lower (forgot to write stuff down, I'll test again later and post them). You could also dramatically lower voltages, which is cool if you want to save energy.
As far as the visible performance of the system, I saw no changes whatsoever, besides folding taking marginally longer. Applications like SolidWorks, and then all of my games seemed to be as responsive as ever. That is not to say that frame rates didn't drop, just that nothing dropped enough for the user to notice.

The fact that the system was just as usable, with only folding be marginally slower, makes me wonder, what are the tangible benefits of overclocking? [not much, but it's fun!]

Related to all of this, I thought of a scenario. Lets say you have a new shiny laptop with something like a 2.4 Ghz i7. Windows, and everything you do with windows, and even games and cpu intensive programs - do not run particularly faster at say 2.4 rather than 2.2 Ghz. This makes me think it might actually be worth underclocking a laptop, to get better battery life.

Anyway, there it is. Underclocking got very boring, so I'm back at a nice comfy 4.3 Ghz.

I would love to underclock a laptop...the trouble is finding a laptop that actually lets you change the clock speeds.

I've done this before to save on temps. I underclocked an old A64 opty and ran a passive heat sink on it for a while on a back up server rig that didn't get a lot work load...just because I could. Though I din't run it for long like that...it made me feel...dirty. Still was cool at the time to run a dual core CPU on a passive heat sink have good temps yet.

Over in the laptop section they have a great thread about undervolting. But yeah, I really wish more (or really any) laptops would make it possible to change the clock.

and lol. That's really cool though that you were able to run even that with passive cooling. I suppose if you wanted a perfectly silent system, you could do something like that.

No reason why you can't have the best of both worlds. My case limited my CPU cooler options and I still wanted to overclock so I ended up with a slight overclock @3.7ghz and a slight under stock voltage @ 1.1v.

My processor now runs 10C cooler than before and it is 100% stable @3.7Ghz.

Just thought I would share. Anyone else have similar results?

I took my old 661 down to either 700 or 900mhz. (I forget) and it was funny how slow it was. temps were crazy low. I am talking under 40c running occt linpack. Its fun but not nearly as fun as oc
