6970 Ridiculous temps - Page 2

If the card is hitting 100C then the fins of the cooler should be very hot to touch. My AXP cooler and HD 6970 hit up to 75C its very very hot. Try to touch it and see. If its not very hot you got a bad sensor.

Well i was just running furmark at an average of 102~103*C at 100% fan. So i dropped the fan down to 50% and, the temps stayed the same. Thought that was odd, so i dropped it more, 20% this time. The temps still unchanged sat at 102~103*C. The fins and pipes aren't all that hot, and im a baby when it comes to heat. But the PCB itself was pretty warm. I put some fans to cool off the PCB but it didn't help the temps at all.

Chalk this up as a bad temp censor or anyone else have some thoughts or things i could try?

Even if its just a bad temp sensor im not worried, but its gonna bother me because that effects my games. It cases a dip every second or so and then moves like its trying to catch up, probably throttling because of the heat it thinks its having.

Temp sensor for sure. Yes the PCB does get hot. Mine gets too hot to touch.

Maybe there was some residue still on the GPU or HS, or a bad seat. I recommend pulling the card, cleaning the TIM, and placing an extremely thin layer (I usually use a small line on one end, then use a credit card to smooth it over the top, and do my best to leave an untra thin layer (like a sheet of paper thin).

If that is the case. Is their a way to get my system to ignore the sensor? Would really hate to send this card back to the seller or into RMA.

EDIT: Will they even RMA since i change the TIM?

Would it really make the ~30*C difference from just too much tim?

I don't know how much you used, but too much TIM acts like an insulator and causes the GPU or CPU to heat up.

I try to use a little less then this:

if your heatsink looks like this when removing, there is too much TIM:

note: Sorry for the pics, it was all I could find to illustrate my thoughts.

The pics are probably more helpful than trying to describe it. Afterall, a picture is worth a million words.

Ill double check that tomorrow and correct it if i need to.
