NVidia Control Panel crashes when enabling SLI.

Thread Starter
Just got 2x Gtx 560s and I wanted to put it together in SLI (to be exact N560GTX-M2D1GD5) so first I tested each with a round of Uniengine, no noticeable problems. So when I try to enable it in SLI the resolution decreases to 1024x720 i believe and then.... NOTHING! The NVidia control panel crashes, and the resolution remains the same. After I restart the computer the video drivers never restored, and I have to re install the drivers in order to get it working again. I have read countless threads here on Overclock.net, and nvidia and nothing seemed to work.

What i have tried:
Driver Sweeper
Older Drivers
Different SLI bridge
Different motherboard bios
Swapping the GPUs around
Reformatting PC

After all of that the only thing I can think of is something wrong with the z68 bios settings, or the bios on the actual GPUs.

Can anyone please shed some light on this!?

EDIT: Went to microcenter and bought a new motherboard, tested with the same error. After a nice long nap I returned the graphics cards.

I'm having the same issue with my 470's.. as soon as you try and enable SLI, Nvidia control panel hangs, and then 1 or both cards show under device manager with conflicts. At first I thought it was the beta drivers I had tried to install (last night) because everything was working fine before that. Each card works perfectly fine by itself, but as soon as you try and enable SLI it all goes to hell. I don't get it, because it was working fine for the last 2 months that i've had all my current parts (well, 8120 is new in the last 3 weeks.) I've also tried every step you mention and more. Nothing works. These aren't new cards obviously so returning them isn't an option for me. The only thing I can do is start RMA's for each vid card, and maybe the motherboard, but that doesn't make me happy in the least... Anyone that can shed any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Well I can SLI, turns out that their was a problem with my windows installation. My windows CD came with SP1 installed with it, and for some reason it wouldn't work whenever i reformatted. I tried reformatting windows7 student edition on the pc and it worked just fine! Hope this helps.

Had the same problem and formatted my computer. Before all other drivers I installed the NVIDIA drivers and tried to enable. Guess what, it worked. I guess you should try too.

Tried that on 2 different hdd setups (raid 0 and single drive) and it didn't make any difference.. Tried a 2nd CHV, tried every possible config of cards/SLI bridges etc and nothing made a difference. So hopefully I'll get my replacement vid card and be back up and running. If not, guess I'll have to swap my other vid card and go from there.

Tell me about it!

I've been running SLI for many months without problem on my EVGA FTW 657 board. It worked no issue at all. Changed my motherboard and CPU last week. Now running the same MSI 560Ti Twin Frozr OC II 880mhz, same Enermax PSU, only the mobo, ram and CPU have changed. Mobo is now P8Z68-V/GEN3 with i5 2500K. As soon as I try to enable SLI, the Nvidia driver crashes and my desktop goes low res. I am able to immediately reinstall the Nvidia driver then reboot, so changes take effect, but SLI CANNOT BE ENABLED.

MSI Taiwan email customer support is useless because you just get an automated reply from Stacey Chen.

I phoned MSI USA (I live in UK) 3 times and they tried various suggestions, none of which worked.

I posted on the Asus forum which was useless. 1 reply in 4 days.

I then posted on Bit-Tech.net in the Asus forum section and I got a helpful reply from user Bindibadgi AKA Richard Swinburne at ASUS. He's been in contact with Asus tech and they have tested SLI on the same model motherboard with ASUS 560ti and reference model. SLI worked. He thinks maybe I should RMA the motherboard.

I am reluctant to do so because it works perfectly in every other way. 5ghz i5 overclock on auto settings.

Both GPU are working in the slots, both GPU display an image. I can set PhysX to work on the second GPU. The only problem is when I try to enable SLI!

I've tried 3 different installs of windows 7 x64.

Tried all of the Nvidia driver versions.

If I RMA'd the board I'd want to buy a replacement board in the meantime. I'd buy an MSI just because I have the MSI SLI.

I dont want to return this Asus board but I would if I was sure there was a fault. I suspect it is an issue of brand incompatibility on a first revision BIOS.

I'm more inclined to sell one or both MSI 560 and buy a single Asus 580. Both my 560Ti's are liquid cooled.

Interesting...

It's the second time I've seen this issue raised about hacked version of windows causing SLI to crash.

I have SLI 560's and didn't come across any issues, all i did was run a clean install on whql drivers. It may be a power issue, if your psu cant supply what the cards are requiring then it will hang.

I am using the same Enermax PSU I used to power the same MSI 560Ti SLI on my EVGA FTW 657 without issue.

The Z68 + i5 uses less power than my 1st gen i7 860 OC'd to 3.8ghz.

SLI worked perfectly on my EVGA board with same PSU.
