Bulldozer scales Nicely alongside 990x - Page 3

Well since no one will buy my Crosshair V, I may end up owning a Bulldozer anyways. Really dont want to. But Im not going to let my board go to waste. Im still going to have to wait for at least another stepping of the chip before i even think of purchasing though.

The Gulftown results are a bit odd, and I am not sure why they stopped at a number of threads equal to the number of logical CPUs when many programs scale beyond this.

For example, in 7-zip I do not get the best compression/decompression speed, or max out CPU utilization, until I am using 18+ threads on my 970.

Should have tested to at least 1.5x the number of logical CPUs, where possible.

Interesting that all the test were performed on Ubuntu 11.10. I guess this helps out with the core utilization.

I understand the fact that some of the software is not properly coded in order to take advantage of intel hyperthreading in certain instances. What I don't understand is how a mobile cpu that is running on a limited platform is capable of beating a i7 990X. Even in certain instances, it just doesn't compute...

It also would have been nice if they tried to keep some similarity in the test setups. It seems like the configurations are all over the place.

Well... I dunno about even piledriver...

looking at it, it's what? Supposed to be 10% faster than bulldozer cores? This is most likely obtained by the new instruction sets, turbo core 3.0 (high turbo OC) and the new platform (FM2). The addition of 10 cores in pairing is really just a novelty at this point as it has yet to price itself with the 8 paired cores in bulldozer cpus right now.

I think AMD are really sticking their heads in the sand about some serious issues regarding their architecture.

I realize that AMD is releasing bulldozer right now and waiting for software to catch up with it's multithread insanity, but what do you think? Intel is just going to sit on their laurels and has nothing planned for the future? Plus they're selling tons more CPUs that AMD at the present because there CPUs work with what there is RIGHT NOW.

So just to recap AMD...

Intelz stealin' all yoz customerz!!

Well no.

Bulldozer is still good because it beats the 2600k in 3 benchmarks!

I might be interested in that Mobo, does it have pci slots ?

Thread Starter
Well, Im still gonna get a fx processor to go in my setup. But for sure my next build I am NOT going to pre buy mobo or anything. I will decide when the time is right and choose intel or amd depending on whats the best deal/performance. I have had PLENTY of intels in my life and just started with AMD the last few years.
