My own BF3 benchmark (Hyperthreading - on vs off))

Thread Starter
Well, I wanted to see if I could see or feel a difference between hyperthreading on and off in BF3. I couldn't find any benchmarks on it or any real evidence so I took the matter into my own hands.

To start this benchmark I ran the FRAPS FPS benchmark. I also ran the same route ingame 4 times (2 for each setting, yeah I know I should have done 3 each but whatever). For the route I took, I did the 2nd misson, the one where you are a marine getting out of the APC. I started the benchmark as soon as I stepped outside and ran it all the way till after the 1st firefight (the one on the ground and your buddy gets shot with a sniper.)

Hyperthreading on

Frames: 28457 - Time: 338553ms - Avg: 84.055 - Min: 51 - Max: 141

Frames: 28928 - Time: 344216ms - Avg: 84.040 - Min: 34 - Max: 142

Hyperthreading off

Frames: 28084 - Time: 331798ms - Avg: 84.642 - Min: 59 - Max: 143

Frames: 28886 - Time: 333764ms - Avg: 86.546 - Min: 40 - Max: 144

As you can see, there really isn't that much of a difference, and I didn't have stutting either, even thought I did when I first started playing in multiplayer. All the Avg's look around the same, as go for the max's. The min's are from the saving as it would dip for a split second to save the game to the HDD.

BUT, with hyperthreading OFF, I can tell, for myself, that the game is "smoother" and more fluid it seems. It maybe just me, but having hyperthreading off maybe a good idea, even though DICE did state that the game will take advantage of hyperthreaded CPU's.

Also, remember this is what I got with my sig rig, running everything ultra, at 1920 x 1200, this includes all AA settings. My CPU ran a little cooler with hyperthreading off also, only by about 3 degrees though, just noting.

If anybody else wants to try this, feel free to post!

This is interesting. I have a 2500K, so I have no hyper-threading. When I was doing research, before I bought this rig, I read that hyper-threading didn't really help in games. As far as I know the only thing better about the 2600K is hyper-threading and 2MB more L3 cache. I chose to just save the 100 bucks and get a 2500K. I know hyper-threading does have advantages in other situations though.

This is actually the very first time I've turned off hyperthreading since I've had my I7 930, and I got it in March of 2010.

I have turned off my multithreading in bios on my i7-2600k and no stuttering issues for my gtx 480 sli. Dont know why it would do that.

I like hearing these results. After giving up H/T in the pursuit of speediness could have been the best move...
I have now turned off HT and have noticed less stutter and a min fps increase of 8 but over all a lot more than that.
Thanks!

EDIT:
I would like to see this linked to the video game/pc thread also. I had to find this via Google.
Also add in some key words such as stutter etc..

I've done some major testing in this area also. HT doesn't help in games. The only game that did show improvement with it on was BC2. It was only 2fps faster with it on than off. Didn't help much on tho. When off, temps drop about 10c. Your 930 at 4ghz HT on vs 4.2ghz HT off, should hit the same temps about and use the same amount of volts. You should test something like that and see how that differs. I'd like to see the results you get like that. Almost every single 1st gen i7 that I've had was able to hit at least 200mhz higher with HT off on just about the same volts.

Try it.

Guess I need to see how much higher of a clock I can go without hyperthreading on the same voltage.
