Whats the point?

Thread Starter
After ranting about not being able to get the Antec 620 to fit I was able to find the right way for it to fit, it's installed but isnt the point of water cooling to drop temps? These temps are higher than the stock intel temps

That was with nothing other than firefox open. I put my ear near where the cpu block/pump is and I hear nothing. I confirmed I plugged the wire into the cpu fan slot per the instructions on the antec booklet. If I touch the CPU block it's warm, really warm. If I touch the rad? It's cool. I have no indication this thing is running. And I turned BOINC on to see if maybe the idle temps suck? It hit 86 degrees Celsius before I turned it back off. What did I waste my money on?

I don't know what I'm more frustrated about, the fact that after getting it all put together its a pile of crap or the fact that I now have to order a real CPU fan and take my rig apart again
post #2 of 17
Do you have 'silent fan' or some other RPM limiting feature enabled in BIOS for the CPU fan?
You would not want this limiting the voltage to your pump.

The 212+ in some cases gets better temps than a h50.

Let me check the BIOS options. I didn't see anything, I did turn off the Turbo mode in anticipation that this was gonna rock my world and I could run OC 24/7 but currently it's at stock clocks.
That seems like some abnormally high temps for the Antec 620. I'm fairly certain that the pump would make at least some vibration or even a little bit of noise, but can't confirm this having never owned one.

If the pump wasn't on at all however, then your temps would probably be much higher than this. It seems that the installation of the unit could be a source of problems. I am of course not accusing you of doing it improperly but I had to personally re-seat my GPU/CPU blocks a couple of times before I was really satisfied with thermal paste distribution and proper contacts(it really can make a large difference).

I'm not bashing All In One units at all but they really cannot reach the performance of a custom loop. They have respectable performance for their price zones against similarly priced Air Coolers; but they do not reach the performance seen in the larger custom set ups.

That said, I'm very sorry you're having trouble with your 620, hopefully someone that owns one can come in here and give some insight. Perhaps the pump isn't functioning properly and that is your problem. But in the mean time I might try to re-seat it, and check that the thermal paste wasn't too thick/too thin and actually covered the CPU.

Thanks for the advice so far. I've gone into the BIOS and found something called CPU Q-fan control, disabled it and my temps jumped about 6 degrees c. I turned it back on then set the fan mode to turbo, which hasnt helped either. I've also had to deal with the BIOS stopping mid boot saying temp error, forcing me into the bios where it shows me the cpu temps are 85c, then I sit there for a few minutes before it drops down enough and I can finish booting windows. I even doubted my wiring, thinking maybe I connected the wrong wires to the wrong thing and there's a plug that plugs into the fan and the fan in the back is on so the unit is getting power.

the paste was pre-applied from factory and it looked decent. I may just end up having to replace this with a V8 or CM 520
post #8 of 17
The pump is a possibility. Those temp characteristics however remind me a lot of when I had a bad mount with the stock cooler. In my system, the stock cooler ended up peaking at about 85c under no load with a very bad mount.

Reseat and see if it's any better

Doesn't the Noctura beat the h100 even? The price is close I suppose, with the noctura slightly cheaper... but theres no worry with aircooling and no pump to power.

The Noctua and H100 are pretty close, with each beating each other in various reviews. The downside to the Noctua, is it is massive! Most cases these days can fit the 240mm radiator on the back or top without a massive block of aluminum/copper filling the entire case.
