Samsung has challenged this in the netherlands and won.

It did work as expected in the Netherlands though, and Samsung has already brought the lowly Neonode N1m in front of the court there -- and had Apple's claims over slide to unlock determined to be "trivial and likely invalid", and the court refused to consider them.

The reason people bash Apple is because of Apple's ridiculous and obviously selfish patents, which is the SUBJECT OF THE THREAD. The topic is Apple, not Microsoft.

Microsoft's lime light in teh ridiculous has past when we knew with Microsoft, things like that was a norm. Apple has the spotlight now since we are going into mobile products now, of course theres going to be more apple bashing. The "now" tech is the mobile platform, Apple, having success in it will undoubtly get these kind of threads. Its not like its unforeseen.

later on, when another tech is in the spotlight, there will be bashing threads about it too.

Who cares when it was applied for, it's such a trivial, general use idea that it shouldn't be awarded a patent PERIOD.

Quit redirecting. Apple is doing the stupid stuff lately so Apple gets the heat.

It's not really bashing when people give an appropriate negative response to a mega-corp that acts in a very dubious and amoral fashion.

Indeed it is but people act like Apple's the only company that does this.

That's fair enough, although I'm mostly referring to the fact that many act as if Apple is the only company that does this.

Appropriate, is the key word here.

Ultimately, why shouldn't they receive the patent for this? They were the first phone to implement it and it was something they thought up, no? Do all droids use this feature? For those that don't, what do they do?

AFAIK, all droids use it. It's too simple a concept to use. It basically says you can't lock the screen.

Idea!
Dear Android:
For new phones, create two options:
1. A screen lock like Garmin's
2. A screen lock like Yours/Apples, but on a mini-sensor. Swype finger across sensor to unlock. It's not the screen.

So much fail in your logic, it's not even funny. They shouldn't get a patent for this, because all they're going to do is use it to slow down competition.

You had to repeat 3 times that Apple is not the only company that does this, that doesn't make it ok for them to do this. They're doing it, and abusing it the most in present times.

No, they did not "think" this up, as it existed before. They copied it, AND implemented it. You know, kinda how Steve Jobs saw Xerox's GUI interface?

He saw it, copied it, implemented it. It's what Apple does best from the very beginning. They "innovate" existing ideas, patent them, and prevent others from using them. It's the Apple way, and why they get so much hate on OCN.

Speaking of Microsoft, I do wish they never bailed out Apple in the 90's.

Last but not least, this is fitting, AGAIN.
