[Gizmodo] Apple Now Owns the Unlock Slide Gesture - Page 9

I don't particularly see the problem here.

Apple is a billion+ dollar company, they clearly know the patent system is... well for a lack of better words just downright derped out of it's mind, so why not take advantage of it?

Is it morally / ethically wrong? Sure, but since when did companies get forced to become moral / ethical compasses? They're in it for profit, and if suing their way with asinine patents is the way to go, well, follow suit HTC, Motorola etc etc, start patenting dumb + obvious things and sue back. Maybe it'll force the patent system to take a good hard look at itself.

Is this whole thing Apple's fault? Nope. It's the simple minded patent system that was once used to patent *real* inventions that would *really* help humanity, those days have gone and it's all about profits now, the system needs to adapt and realize most of the technology based patents out there are way too vague to be of any use at all.

if it's morally and ethically wrong, it's certainly apple's fault because they've done this cognizantly.

I am going to patent the concept of using a fruit as a product icon. Then I could collect royalties for every iMac, iPhone, iAnything Apple makes with Apple logo

I liked Apple when they still made pre-"i" era Macintosh. And I won't change my tablet either.

PS useless tidbit, iTune may have had more time to build collection of apps for iPhone and iPad but last I checked, it's still limited to one unique app so the first of a certain type (ie a solitaire game) gets listed. A better version by different author can't use iTune and can only offer it to jailbroken devices. Android don't limit like this so you can have a choice of 20 different solitaire game to pick. Apple can suck on this.

Right, I am not normally one to get involved in the Apple hate but that has just taken it too far for me.

I'll unlock my X10 however I want and you can shove your generic piece of rubbish patent.

It doesn't matter imo. Apple isn't around because they are morally and ethically bound to make proper decisions, they're around to produce a profit and secure the capability to make a profit in the following quarters.

If being ethical and moral were a requirement / anything to gauge a company by, we wouldn't have 90% of the companies we do today. No company is clean and cares how it used to be in the 30's - 50's. It's all about profits and how they can screw the next guy over for a few extra cents on the dollar.

It's sad but it's true.

For example, we had fully functioning electric cars in the 70's. Their batteries were garbage, but for the small towns they were built for they were perfect. Was it morally / ethically correct for large oil corporations to snuff it out? Is it right to artificially inflate oil prices to have record profits every quarter? Is hiring lawyers to find tax loop holes to protect those profits and to essentially avoid paying any taxes morally / ethically fair? Oh, no? Go figure. Guess what though, as a company they couldn't care less.

edit:

lolwut? Just open the Appstore and search for "Flashlight" and look at how many copy paste jobs of the same Flashlight app, free and paid, is out there. If anything that's the Appstore's biggest problem, having about 30 of every single [basic] app just with a different name and a different icon. All to provide a simple function. It's absurd.

the reason this one matters soo much is because pretty much all touchscreen based smartphones use this feature.
