building first pc oct 29, final check

Thread Starter
Hi, I have been lurking these forums for a few months and i'm not really sure this is the right spot. So sorry in advance.

I will be building my first pc this weekend and i just wanted to put down the hardware list to see if i had over looked some compatibility issues.

Mobo: asrock p67 extreme4 gen3
cpu: intel i5 2500k (plan on trying to get 4.5 out of it)
Ram: g.skill ripjaw 8g(2x4) 1600
gpu: 2x sapphire 6870 xfire (picked up 2 for under 300 from the interweb)
Psu: corsair hx650w modular
dvd drive: random one from my old desktop(2009)
HDD : 1tb seagate barracuda 7200rpm 6.0gb/s 32mb cache
Cpu cooler: cooler master 212+(push only)
Case: cooler master haf 912 (wish i had known about the advanced one)
Case fans: front - CM 200mm red led + CM 120mm red led (moded into empty 3 5.25 bays)
Side - 140mm
Top - CM 200mm red led
rear exhasut - sycthe 120mm
OS: windows 7 64 O.E.M

I also had a few quick questions, any feedback would be much appreciated ( considering before i decided to do this all i have done is upgrade ram and gpu).

1. I have seen bits an pieces about case fans speed being controlled by the mobo/bios but cant seems to narrow it down. I am only looking to slow down the side 140mm a bit, the thing is a little loud. i got everything other fan hooked up full power(other that 212 fan) to molex using a homemade fan splitter.

2. Assuming everything in the build goes right and i get windows installed, which drivers are going to give me problems updating? i am a complete nub when it comes to this, i am aware windows should pick up most. I was wondering if theres a good list of drivers to download onto a flash drive to save some headache and time.

3. The actual physcial building part hasn't got me worried, But getting windows installed and setup right, getting correct and up to date drivers, or the fact ill be pretty clueless how to find the problem of a defective piece of hardware (should there be one) has me sweating quite a bit. Any general rig setup info would be much appreciated. things around what are usually botched by a first time builder.

well that was longer than intended when i started so i am sorry for that. The PC will be used 90% for gaming( bf3, D3, cs:go are the big ones im looking forward to)also wont be on 24/7 if that matters any. Any help is much appreciated.

thanks for your time.

my main concern is your power supply. as far as i've read, the 6870 uses about 250w at load and the i5 2500k is around 100w. that already puts you at 600w, do you plan on overclocking?

I have googled it and read other posts that this one should be ok even with a OC cpu. from what i have read the 6870 is low compared to others on power consumption. I have also put the system through a couple psu calculators and the highest i ever got to was 79% usage.

People have been writing thats these are usually underrated as well, but who knows how much credit is behind that.

i would say get a Crucial M4 SSD too

also if you do plan to crossfire then you will need a bigger PSU.

No. He will not. A 650W will be plenty for CF'd 6870s. They are pretty low power consuming cards.

Also +1 for Crucial m4 128GB.
