Is VPN safe?

Thread Starter
So i have a media server at home where i had all my movies and things shared, and i currently had it as a VPN host.. what i wanted to do is that i want to be able to connect to my home server from my school, or any places outside that have internet access, so then i can maybe stream some medias or do file transfer from my home.. and my question is that is it safe to do so? is it safe to copy&paste files through VPN from outside? the server is running windows7.. I'm a total noob on this.. can someone please shed some light on me of how to use VPN properly? thanks in advance!

yes VPNs are safe are long as you use SSH tunneling (I believe, a bit of a noob to this myself) nobody can see any data being transfered between the VPN client and host

SSH is an encryption protocol I believe no a software. There are plenty of VPN programs out there, I personally use HidemyAss.com and their VPN service for 11 dollars a month and I can play games past firewalls and surf blocked content at places

Yes, Personally I think VPN is the safest way to surf the web and access files and such. No one can see what you are doing like your ISP.

Astrill.com is a great VPN been using since i arrived here in china. They were updating servers today and i had zero connection interruptions which was very nice. Not sure if this is the case will all VPNs but with Astrill you can also install it on your iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

Remember folks, he doesn't need a paid VPN service; you're talking about something completely different altogether.

Edit - xxlap1xx...VPN is definitely safe(r), and the way to go.

And OP...assuming proper setup (I guess you're using PPTP, so "maximum strength encryption" and MS-CHAP v2), VPN is definitely safe, and the way to go.
yea.. i'm on PPTP, but not sure about the MS-CHAP v2.. i'm not at home right now, i'm at school, and good thing is that i can connect to my home from school.. but it's just that i couldn't access my shared files yet.. probably need to work on that later when i get home.. i had ports tcp 1723 forwarded.. are there any other ports that need to be forwarded too?
