HD6950 or 2x HD6870?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I have one HD6870 1GB Twin Frozr II, considering X-firing 2 of them.

Or should I just sell the 6870 and go with a Sapphire HD6950 2GB?

I'm aiming to be able to run BF3 on Ultra settings at 40-60FPS

Or at least High settings at 80-100FPS. Currently with the one 6870 I'm getting 40-60FPS on High

Also have a random question: Is it frowned upon to browse the internet while running Prime95? redface.gif

If you're gaming single monitor 1080 I would crossfire. cheaper option that will blow away a 6950. of course 2 6950's give you future proofability. I see you use multi monitors ? Sell it and grab 2 6950's if so. the extra vram will become more and more important going forward.

A single HD 6950 wont be able to achieve the framerates you expect, it simply lacks power.
Think you'll have to go 6870 crossfire, BUT then again, according to the BF3 VRAM usage thread, it looks like it takes up to 2 GB VRAM on ultra settings.

A 6870 xfire setup would essentially only have 1GB of usable VRAM which means your VRAM would be full and would buffer to the system RAM.. and that results in performance loss, but I'm not sure how big the performance hit would be.

So neither is really recommendable for your needs I'm afraid.
Two 6950's on the other hand would do just fine if you have the extra money tongue.gif
Then again, I'd ask around and see if someone manages to benchmark the game on ultra settings with a 1GB setup to see how much it really affects performance when your VRAM is overloaded.

lol... funny you should say that... cuz I'm having issues with my bottom DVI port so currently I'm unable to have dual monitors right now anyway. Sounds like a ton of people have had the same problem and I can't find a fix yet (Other than getting an HDMI to DVI converter, bleh).

I was unaware that 2x 6870s CF would only produce 1GB of usable VRAM, I thought it would be 2 frown.gif

Guess I will have to save for two 6950's then

Personally I just bought a new rig and put a 6950 in it. I have a friend that we have been comparing my HIS IceQ 6950 2GB to his crossfire 6870's he blows me away everytime. When he just uses 1 card we see about a 10-20% performance increase depending on the GPU intensive game.

I currently run Bf3 in the 50-70 range on ultra @ 1080

50-70FPS on Ultra is all I want for now anyway. And then maybe down the road I could get another one. I think I'll go this route.

Just out of curiosity is your friend playing on Ultra with the 2x 6870s... and if so how many FPS?

OP your already into one 6870, most logical is go for a second and crossfire. Yes you'll be able to play BF3 in High settings.

Ultra would require two 6950's and not because of the VRAM on single monitor but because of the GPU performance.

Here's a link showing a single 6950 vs 6870 in crossfire. As current as July. Just an example of 1920x1200 and 2560x1600. In your case you'd be interested in the 1920x1200 graph.

In 1920x1200 Crysis 2 DirectX 11 class graphics card performance DX11 - Ultra - HQ Textures

6870x2 = 55 FPS ( 5 FPS higher than one 580 )
6950 = 33 FPS

In 2560 x 1600 Crysis 2 DirectX 11 class graphics card performance DX11 - Ultra - HQ Textures

6870x2 = 33 FPS ( 4 FPS higher than one 580 )
6950 = 19 FPS

However is someone asked before buying any GPU which they'd go for, I'd go for one mid-level 6950 now and crossfire a second later over two low-end cards now. Pricing will drop soon after the next gen cards come out and two 6950's smoke two 6870's bottom line.

On single 1920x1200 resolution monitor here are some results playing BF3.
