Looks like you tent to drag your fingernails over the top [or something else] of the coating as well which may have led to the flaking. I've had my mamba for two years now and it's still cosmetically sound aside from a bit of shinyon the two side rubber grips.

My original MX518 bought in 2006 is still in great shape, the right and left clicks are a little weaker, and the skates on the bottom have worn down some but other than that still great. Now I also have 2 newer revisions of this mouse, both of them with much less use the rubber is wearing off them, plus they changed the skates to big fat ones that suck. Original build quality seems to be the best with this mouse.

Logitech mx510 here since 2005. The thumb rest is shinier than some of the other dark parts of the mouse. The blue marble finish is still perfect. Mouse wheel works great. No sticky buttons, they all work great. Feet wore down after a few years, replaced them with Hyperglides.

Seem like this Mamba coating is really thin and not strong at all. Look like chocolate bar cover.

I did some research and actually it is very common, well mine is deeper scratch but not man made looking then it is factory process fault kind.
