Long vs Short DVI-D Cables

Thread Starter
I just realized that my monitor cables from NEC and Dell are like 5' long and the way I am setting everything up I am going to require at least 10'.

I just purchased a couple 15' DVI-D cables from Monoprice and I was wondering if there will be any noticeable performance decrease or some type of extra lag coming from either of my monitors.

Does this have any effect on their performance whatsoever?

15' should be fine.

Quote:
Cable Length
The maximum length of DVI cables is not included in the specification since it is dependent on the pixel clock frequency, and hence the video mode's bandwidth requirements (which is a function of resolution and refresh rate). In general, cable lengths up to 4.5 m (15 ft) will work for displays at resolutions of 1,920 × 1,200. This resolution will work even up to 10 m (33 ft) if appropriate cable is used. Cable lengths up to 15 m (50 ft) can be used with displays at resolutions up to 1,280 × 1,024. For longer distances, the use of a DVI booster is recommended to mitigate signal degradation. DVI boosters may use an external power supply.

:O

Am I cutting it close?

Should I have gotten the 10' instead?

Is the effect cumulative? Like, is a 15' cable worse than a 10' cable even though the 15' may WORK with 1920x1200, it may not be optimal?

Edit: My main concern is gaming quality and input lag.

It's digital. It either works or it doesn't. Signs of it not working would be sparkles and flashing pixels. Don't buy into the "picture quality" BS.

As for lag, I think it's under 1ms per 100miles of cable, so I doubt you'd notice...

I'm running a $12 Monoprice.com 20' HDMI from my DirecTV HD/DVR to my Samsung 50" Plasma inside the wall with metal studs and...works perfect for well over a year.

Do not believe the hype. Believe in digital.
