GUIDE: Asus Maximus IV Gene Z + Mac OSX install

Thread Starter
Okay some of you might want to boot Lion as your main/secondary OS and I can confirm it's rock solid with this motherboard. Some of these instructions are from my own experiences and others I have pinched from insanelymac. Without further ado, here are the instructions:

To boot MacOS, you need an EFI loader (like iBoot) and a genuine OSX disc - or you can make use of a 'distro' like iAtkos L1. However, the latter is indeed illegal so for obvious reasons I will not be discussing that matter in this forum.

Steps

1. Update your BIOS settings.

Extreme Tweaker

AI Overclock Tuner = Manual
Turbo ratio = By number of active cores mode
For i7 2600K (you'll need to get the correct settings for your CPU):
1-Core Ratio Limit = 38
2-Core Ratio Limit = 37
3-Core Ratio Limit = 36
4-Core Ratio Limit = 35
Internal PLL Overvoltage = Disabled

Advanced\CPU Configuration

CPU Ratio = Auto
CPU C1E=Enabled
C3 Report=Enabled
C6 Report=Enabled
Package C State Limit=No Limit

Advanced\USB Configuration

EHCI Hand-Off=Enabled

2. Burn EFI to disk, so download iBoot as it's one of the newest and has Sandybridge support.

3. Boot your machine and ensure that the optical device is your primary boot, it will load a splash screen for iBoot. Stick your OSX disc in and press F5, and when the OSX install disc appears, move over it and press enter.

4. In theory, OSX install menu should load and you can install OSX. Make sure you format your drive or partition into MacOS Journaled. Install, reboot and boom!

Additional installation notes
  • If at step 4 the install doesn't load properly, go back to step 3, and before you press return to load the menu, enter -x then press return. This is a version of safe mode for MacOS and should help the install to go through.
  • After you've installed it, you will still need the iBootDVD to load the OS. You will need to install Chamelon R2 to the HDD to load it without the CD (do this in MacOS). The easiest option is to use a seperate HDD, but you can partition it if you need.
  • When you've loaded MacOS, it will not have all the drivers you need (or Kexts as they are called in MacOS). Your job is to find them and add them to the system. Most things work out of the box, but things like Sleep, Sound etc need some help.

Now, to ensure power management works properly, you need to flash the BIOS which has been tweaked. Use Revoboot as the boot loader with the attached miniSSDT in /Extra/ACPI. Please read the Revoboot thread to find out how to compile this for your system, everyone's will be different according to their CPU/graphics card combo. You'll need to make sure:

You have correct efi-injection for sound to work.

You are using MacMini5,3 as model identifier

Have also attached ethernet kext (64-bit only) and sound kext.

DOWNLOAD from insanelymac

I take no thanks for this BIOS as it was compiled by DGSGA of InsanelyMac and I also take no responsibility for you flashing this - it is completely at your own risk.

As it happens I have Lion running fine and I haven't flashed this BIOS, but I know that power management will not be working 100%. It depends how perfect you want your install to be.

I think that's all - so good luck smile.gif

P.S. If you want the new BIOS you will need an insanelymac account. I don't think it's right if I rip the file and share it without thanks to the creator!

While I'm sure people will appreciate the thread, I believe OSx86 discussion isn't allowed here. I could be wrong however.

Cool I had Lion on my Gigabyte board with 570 running, I haven't checked since a couple months ago, I wonder if 6950 support is available now.

Yes you can, you just need to set busratio=24 in the boot.plist. 5 Ghz works fine in osx. So does PPL over voltage, but then you loose sleep.

Yes it is from http://netkas.org . Though it is not full support as OpenCL doesn't work, but eyefinity and opengl/QE sure does.

AFAIK, using the official disc (as in paid for), isn't necessarily illegal. If you own the software, you own the software. Apple cannot write laws, only a licensing agreement. Their licensing agreement says you cannot install OS X on any non-Mac, but this threat is not supported by law and is therefore irrelevant. ALL that Apple can do is say that they will not support certain hardware (which by the way, they don’t).

Naturally it is not for me to decide whether this forum deems it allowed or not...so if I've been a very naughty boy, please can a mod/admin let me know?
