Hot Q6600

Ah yes... the good old Q6600 G0. At least that's what I thought.

I just bought it recently, but I ran into heat issues. At stock voltage, no overclock, the Q6600 hits 58°C on IBT. I lapped the CPU and I have a lapped Thermaltake FRIO sitting on top of it. I reseated the heatsink 5 times and have been using a lil drop of Cooler Master High Performance Thermal Compound.

Yet.. it still hits 56°C in no time. I can't overclock it a bit or it just slams shut after hitting 72°C on just 1.3v @3Ghz. I had a Q8200 in that motherboard for a while and it ran nice and cool with my Thermaltake FRIO on it, even at 2.9Ghz and 1.3v. (max. 52°C) I got the Q6600 because it was kinda cheap and I was hoping for a decent overclock, but this is just horrible..

I got the CPU from a very respectable guy in town, he never used the chip for overclocking purposes.

I'm out of ideas really, does anyone have any suggestions as to why this CPU behaves so oddly in the temperature department ?

EDIT : Also, I never used this thermal compound before, I just got it today, but I don't think that could be it, right ? I might grab a tube of artic silver 5 tomorrow.

Would you happen to be using an Asus or ABIT board?

EDIT: Oh I see the HS. I have a Corsair A70 with my own fans that cools my G0 @ 1.47 very well. What fans do you have on that cooler?

Two 120mm thermaltake fans, the ones that came with the cooler.

However I might have a first clue as to why it runs so hot. I'm suspecting IBT.

Prime95 after 30 minutes gives me a max temp of 60°C at 1.3v and 3.2Ghz !

Could this be it ? IBT would just go bonkers, hit 72°C and shut down at that voltage/speed.

Yeah IBT is a crazy temp maker good for quick tests.

I use Prime it is more real....

Yes indeed, I'm trying 3.4Ghz at 1.4v right now and it seemed vaguely stable with 69°C as an absolute max. So I'm guessing IBT is no good for this chip ? Although that does seem kind of odd...
What does it make on OCCT or Prime95? IBT has no real-world value IMO, it just makes stupid amounts of heat.

*EDIT* I see 69C with P95? That's way too much for stock.

Double check your mount and make sure the fans are blowing in the same direction.

What's your case's airflow like?

60 C for load on 3.2 isn't terrible. Hell, my G0 hits that at stock 2.4 with stock intel heatsink lol..

Motherboard bowed? Does your heatsink come with a back plate? Are you using it? Is it too tight?

You have the same temps as I do, except I have a B3, and I'm not lapped -- so something probably is up. Could just be luck of the draw and got a ****ty IHS solder job leading to abnormally high temps (for a G0).
