I would shoot for Paradigm or Cerwin Vega.

Paradigm are really nice speakers, but you will have to pay a pretty penny to get them.
To me though Cerwin Vega on the other hand has lost some of their appeal in the last 15 years.

no kidding

I have made my mind up on the speakers though. I may hold on and wait for rti 4s for the desktop.

Right now I'm trying to find a good receiver to pair with the C404s coming my way.

As for driving the Polks, I know this maybe overkill future-proofing, but being the engineer that I am:

I'm going to follow this guys plans with some modifications for better performance.

Bought my C404s yesterday.

Reaction: HOLY $H!T!!!! They sound incredible!

I was talking to the guy who was selling them to me about floor standing sets. He used to work in a high end audio and theater store in Stillwater. They apparently sold brands such as MB Quart, Paradigm, Cerwin Vega, and a couple other names I didn't recognize.

We got to talking about why he chose the MB Quarts over the other brands and he said because they sounded much better than anything they carried and they were a little bit cheaper. Sounds good to me!

All in all, for $120, I just hit a jackpot! I could not be happier with these C404s!! Now I just need to find a receiver to drive them! Originally I was thinking about getting something high end but now money is saying maybe just a good stereo receiver for a temporary solution until I can get something better.

have you thought about getting the Onkyo HT-RC 370. same thing as the NR-709 except for dual hdmi outs

That's a really good deal but I don't have $500. I am trying to find something used and cheap.

HDMI would be good. I really only need 3 HDMI input and 1 HDMI output, but it won't be a deal breaker as long as the receiver is good.

Later when I have more money I will consider upgrading.

How much are you willing to spend on the receiver?
