AMD FX 6100 Question - Page 3

ok, at least we are talking constructively now tongue.gif

PII x4 is more of a side-grade if even that, DDR2 vs DDR3 performance difference is negligible... his VGA is bottleneck thumb.gif

What's your budget, and what sort of gains are you expecting? i.e., gaming performance, video encoding, multitasking, etc.?

Despite my vehement defense that BD isn't a "phail" that many make it out to be in various threads, I don't know that I'd suggest it unless we know what you're expecting and what your budget is. And will this be a new system from the ground up? like, new mobo, CPU, and RAM?

If you're just looking for better gaming performance, I would agree with others--you will probably see the most noticeable difference by simply upgrading your graphics card.

DDR3 ram not needed, you got 4 gb of ddr2

gpu is a must what is your budget?

<$200 - HD 6870
<$250 - HD 6950 2gb or GTX 560 Ti
<$350 - HD 6970 or GTX 570
<$500 - GTX 580 or CF 6870/6950 or SLI 560 Ti
>$700 - GTX 590 or HD 6990 or SLI 570 or CF 6970
> $1000 - SLI 580/590 or CF 6990

To max out BF3 at 1080p anything with a 6970/GTX 570 or better.

With your current psu I would look into a new QUALITY one if you plan on getting any of the above gpus.

650 watts - for anything under the $350 category
750-850 watts - for anything under the $700 category
1000 watts - for anything over the $1000 category

Your cpu freezes on OC coz it doesn't have unlocked multipliers...read more on how ppl OC your cpu and try from there. No experience with your cpu so I cant comment

Have you made sure you're following general rules of overclocking? Have you read through the OC guides here on OCN? They helped me out a ton.

What's your budget for a video card?

This has many of the resources linked: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/225371-intel-cpu-essentials-collected-guides.html

It can seem like a lot of reading, but it will definitely pay off.

Up to $300 can get you a good step up in performance. Do you have a preference to stay with nvidia, or do you not care as long as it's the best cost : performance?

I'm not sure why you think a CPU will make that much difference. For your system, you need two things:

1. Do not continue to use Win7 RC1, if you are. It's stealing software. Buy Win7 Home Premium.
2. Buy an HD6870.

After a year or so, sell your rig with the 9800GTX+ in it, and upgrade to 1155, and buy another 6870.
