New Gaming PC Build need lots of help

post #1 of 14
Thread Starter
Hey all. I havent been gaming much since bf2142 started giving me problems on my laptop and so Ive decided to purchase a new comp mainly to play bf3. I was into overclocking in the past but I dont think I will overclock at all and if I do it will be something conservative. All I know is that I need a p67 mobo and an intel 2500k. From what Ive read these are the best bang for the buck. Just not sure which mobo to get. Id also need the other essentials like a gpu psu and ram. If you post links please try and direct me to canadian sites, although links arent really necessary. I just need to know whats good and Ill do the deal finding. Budget is around $600 for all the essentials. Can it be done for this little? Thanks

Surprised no one jumped on this easy topic

Is the $600 in USD or CAD?

But basically, you can check newegg, not sure if that is Canada port. But there is TigerDirect I think and NCIX

But basically;
Intel Core i5 2400/2500 (K), if you plan to overclock, if not stock 2400 is good enough to save cash

ASRock/ASUS/Gigabyte are the best boards on the market atm

G.Skill RAM 2x2 or 2x4, both are good. Most say 8GB is to much for gaming but if you can spare the cash, why not. Only ~50USD for a good set. 1600MHz is a good standard.

GPU: HD 6790 is prolly your best bet for that price.

Will look around but thats it from the top of my head

EDIT: Forgot about the HSF, Coolermaster 212+, but there are others just as good. Can't remember off hand

I would do something like the below for mainstream gaming usage. Will be able to OC well if you want to, but you won't have to for good performance. With no GPU I come to ~$750USD for everything.
case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811352010
500GB HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136795
650W PSU (in case you wanted to SLI later): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151088
8GB of RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231311
MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157271
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

My GPU of choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127565

Yes there are cheaper way to go, but you wouldn't regret the extra money spent. You can cut to 4GB of RAM, an NVIDIA 550, a slower hard drive, drop the HSF to a 212+, but I beg you please - don't cheap out on the PSU or case, you'll regret it later if you do.

I find it ridiculous to pay $200+ on a cpu and $150 on a gpu when the primary goal is the most FPS/$. Even more when you are on a thight budget like his.
Grab the cheapest : i3/phenom 955 and slap a 6870 == FPS monster
/thread

EDIT : Never knew we could run a computer without an HDD.

EDIT 2 : Guys, HE'S GOT $600 NOT $1200

Seasonic Gold PSU lmao 1/5 of the build price gone. Yeah right

I like the mobo and psu that mastercheese suggested. Ram is good too. Gonna go with the 2400k or 2300k if one exists. Just a question about Which gpu to get. Ati 6870, ati 6790, nvidia 550 or the 460? Im not curdling out on the gpu and would even spend upto 250$ on one
600 for the build is not a fixed price. Ill spend extra if there's gonna be a significant difference

What about my sig rig. How will that hold up for bf3?
post #9 of 14
For your sig rig, not a chance if you want to enjoy it.
