Problems with overclocking FX-8120 via multiplier

Thread Starter
I'm trying to overclock my cpu but the multiplier doesn't seem to want to raise. When raising it, the system becomes extemely slow, even with voltage boosts. It will reach the same frequency stable with FSB oc. Is this a bios problem or do I have a faulty cpu?

with just a multiplier raise it should not be going slow. Just how much are you raising it? I would try doing a combination of the 2 set cpu/nb Frequency to something like 222mhz and the multiplier to 19. that gives you 4.2Ghz and shouldnt need more than 1.375-1.425 volts. I have never messed with a bulldozer but just going off experience and things ive read. By bringing your cpu/nb up to 222 tha'ts gonna raise ur NB to 2200. You can opt to lower it to as close to stock (2000mhz, or 2200mhz not sure) if you want or bump the nb volts up just a tiny bit. Also I would recommend lowering the HT to as close to 2000 as you can (not sure if FX has 2200 mhz stock ht, i think i remember it does) anyways what speed is your ram? if it is 1600 it is going to require 1.65 volts off the top of my head I really cant think of why it is running "slow" unless you just brought it up too high. Be very careful and take baby steps. You prob need to just mess around with it i.e. cpu=205 multiplier =18.5, cpu=210 multiplier=18.5, cpu= 215 multiplier=19 etc.... and run prime in between for stabiulity and monitoring temps with hardware monitor or something. Let me know how everything goes!

Just going from the stock 15.5 to 16.5 does it. I have 4 sticks of 1600 ram.

oh wow. ummm thats a little strange. I am curious if it does it if you raise it to X16.5 and lower the cpu freq to 190 or so...This will keep you right around stock clocks (3.1) Do you have all the cores activated, auto or what? if so maybe try disabling the odd number cores or the even cores or one at a time. Maybe you have a core thats giving you troubles. are all of your voltages on auto when you up to 16.5? im just trying to get a better understanding of this as it does seem a little odd. is your ram set to 1600 mhz in bios? are your timings too loose(to high) or too tight(too low)

please list your system specs for the fx-8120. including bios version of the mother board. Im assuming you have the most updated version correct? give me more information and we might get a grip on this beast!

Well I think I found the problem monitoring the frequency while running cinebench. It seems to like to set it at a 7 multiplier when all cores are at 100%. Am I missing a setting here?

EDIT: My system specs are the same as my siggy but with a 8120. 0810 bios

It sounds like your CPU is throttling down, you may need to turn off turbo.

Did you disable all power consumption controls like C1E, C6, CNQ, APM, and also disable Turbo Core?

I found that with my Asus M5A97 mobo that if I did not disable those, I get weird stability issues. Now I can run a solid 4.4ghz just by upping the multiplier and voltage.

Turbo and power controls are all off, set cpu max capability to 140% through bios

it seems as we are getting nowhere. you say that it is 100% stable when overclocking the cpu/nb freq alone and not the multiplier? how high can u get it stable with this method? you never answered about your bios revision. Do you have the latest one? Other than that I dont have any more answers I hope it all works out for ya!
