Is there any way to lower ping?

I may start playing a game that is very ping oriented and the server I play on I dont get that good of ping. What can I do? I remember there was a program about 5 years ago that dropped mine and my friends ping by like 25-40.

Also there are proxy's out there that you can connect to but I dont want to pay.

The biggest thing is to make sure that nothing else is happening on your network at the same time. There are routers/software that will attempt to "shape" the traffic in order to make it so the gaming packets get priority, but this only goes so far and isn't needed if you just ensure that your not doing a lot of background activity. To what game are we referring?

I've heard two things when it comes to those:
1. Some people swear by it and will tell you it lowers ping and improves performance
2. Other people say it makes no difference because of how advanced modern day (built-in) Lan chip-sets are, and how generally powerful computers are as well.

Personally I'm inclined to believe the latter. I believe it was also the general consensus of MaximumPC when they did a review on it. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: Apparently they have done multiple reviews, here's one of them though: Link

Nothing more than 5ms. I won a BigFoot Killer NIC from a LAN last year, tried it out, and couldnt find a single reason as to why it would be worth the price.

Where are you located and where is the server you're trying to connect to located? ISP ?

A buddy of mine had one, will it? Yes. By enough to justify it's cost? No.

EDIT: Another thing is it could be your ISP routing you through a different direction then where you need to be going to get to said server.

An example would be. I'm from southern Indiana -- Usually, my closest data center for good ping is Chicago (used to get like 16ms) on ComCast. tracert showed that it was basically a direct connection all the way there.

Then, one day, I had roughly 80ms in latency... why is this? Another tracert showed me going nearly half the distance, over to atlanta, up to new jersey, down to atlanata again, and then to Chicago... they re-routed my connection.

I switched to DSL... back to about 22ms..... at 1.5mb DL --- Now I have Fiber Optic, so much better.

Could you also do a ping test via http://pingtest.net/ as well.

Grease the ping packets. yessir.gif

or get rid of all the 0's as the 1's are skinner...

Hmm dont know if I should get one or not. If it only lowers 5ms then its not worth it.

Thanks for all the input.

how old is your modem and router? I used to have awful ping issues when gaming and couldn't figure out why. Decided to change out my modem one day (80$) and it opened up a whooole new world lol gl
