you got very very lucky with your chip. stop making the OP expect that his chip will even remotely reach those clock speeds. unless he got a golden chip too.

If 7+ people say the Q8xxx isn't great for overclocking and you claim it's great. It's more likely that you were lucky with your chip and this is not a standard event.

I owned 6 different Q8xxx CPUs and most didn't pass 3.2 - 3.3Ghz without running on extreme voltages.
He's got it on a UD3P, and that's the key. I had a Q8300 that wouldn't break 3.0 on other boards. One night of tuning on a UD3L and I got 3.6 on 1.32VCore. It could run 3.7 no problem, and I bet I could have got alot more out of it if I kept tuning the board for FSB, but 480FSB is plenty for a family member's 24/7 rig. With a higher multiplier, I think 4.0 would be simple but Q8300 is only 7.5X. And look at these temps:

Unless you have a UD3 series, it's just not going to happen, and his power phases are weak.

Most of the people saying the Q8400 is no good for overclocking don't own one.I agree there are better chips out there for oc'ing I am just saying it isn't a bad cpu for the money. It will outperform Q6600 clock for clock (I own both) but not by much.Alot of people who claim crappy overclocks are using low end motherboards or are hindered by slow memory, you can't always blame the chip.I am not a big believer in this golden chip theory, many people have hit 4ghz on the Q8400.

And here is that 3.6 Q8300's Crysis 2 score with a stock 560 Ti TF2, for anyone who thinks that chip would bottleneck a 560:

Oh and the Q6600 out performs the Q8 at the same clocks. I also have both and I've benched them head to head with the same graphics card. At 3.6 my Q6600 edged out the Q8300 in every game bench I ran. Not by much, but consistently. Q6600 has better cache and the higher FSB doesn't make a **** of difference for the Q8.

Just want to say that I did not mean to imply that everyone is going to see huge overclocks with their Q8400,just that it does have some potential for a decent overclock with the right components and it really is not a bad cpu. "Despair" asked if 3.2ghz was possible on the GA-P45T-ES3G with stock cpu cooler and I believe it is.

My P5K(vanilla) does 3.8ghz with 3 phases and a crappy little heatsink.Besides that board handles 1600fsb natively and that's all he needs for the 3.2ghz he was looking for.He would be better off with a higher end board but that's what he wants to use.I would always recommend spending your money on the best motherboard you can get and buy a cheaper cpu,it usually works out better that way than the other way around.Personally I'd be buying 1155.
