You can't just praise with studies that validate your time spent playing video games while hate mongering the ones that don't. The outcome of a study shouldn't affect its validity.

Edit: Oops, there's a link to the paper in the article.

The reason we are praising the studies that validate our time with video games is because we know, prove, experience, and see what they are researching with our own eyes and minds. Seriously, it's very, very simple, and very, very true. If I spend my time shooting people on Battlefield 3, what time will I have left to shoot some one in real life? I won't even have the impulses to get violence out of my system, because BF3 and/or other shooters and violent games do it for me.

On a side note, I don't even possess a non-violent video game in my collection though, except rockband, so to me when some one says "violent" video games, I just scratch out the word violent. lol

Well that goes for time intensive hobbies in general. From what I've read of the study, which is not a lot actually, it seems they're concluding that time = X + Y = 1, time spent playing violent video games = X, free time to commit heinous crimes = Y, more of X = less of Y. That may be true but almost anything can be substituted in for X.

I would be more worried if it was all Americans working on it, but when I see the German in there I start to think something got Engrished in translation and missed when it was proofread because the chaps proofreading did the writing.

Same.

I have serious doubts that video games are going to lower violent crime in any measurable fashion.

You can test this out though.. Offer 5,000 people with violent criminal records the opportunity to play M-rated games for 4 years.. Once they complete the minimum hours necessary then release them with all the perks of being a felon. If the majority don't resort to crime as a result of being essentially 3rd class citizens (or plain jerks), then we have a magic cure to mayhem on our hands.

There are loads of fun ways to test this too! Specifically pick people with a combo of drug possession and assault charges and give them a playstation 3. Rapelay for people with various sexual assault charges! Call of Duty for those vets with new criminal records suffering from PTSD!

You could potentially do this forever.. There's a wealth of people in the US to test with
