6950 vs 6970 new games

Thread Starter
Hey I know there are a lot of threads about this but as new games have been released(BF3,MW3 comming soon,Crysis 2 DX11 new patch, etc) I can't make up my mind.
I have enough money to get a HD6950 but I can pay some extra cash to get the 6970 although here in my country the 6970 is $110 more than the 6950 2gb version.

I want a card that lasts,I know hardware changes all the time but maybe then I can CF it and still have a powerful card.

What do you guys think is it worth the extra cash?

Thanks.

I have a ref 6950 with the shaders unlocked. Best card i have ever had. I have owned the 5850, 6870 and now this 6950. If you can flash the bios you'll pretty much have a 6970 for the price of a 6950.

Good luck.

Like we've seen with the GTX 580 vs GTX 480 and now with the 6950/70, at the same clocks the extra shaders offer minimal performance boost. Once the core and memory clocks are increased, the user will achieve similar 6970 performance with a stock 6950. The Techpowerup test was done with COD4, a DX9 game at an unknown resolution. My test was done using DX11 games that are more demanding and resemble other new titles on the market. I'm not saying one test is better than the other, it really depends on how the test was done and results vary. It's obvious now why AMD limited the 6950 to 840MHz OC in CCC, once the 6950 is OC'd to 6970 clocks you have a 6970. There's more than one way to get to 6970 performance with your 6950 and the best way is to simply overclock it. Don't read into 3DMark11 results, in actual gameplay it's all a wash.

Disclaimer: Unlocking, modding or overclocking video cards are at your own risk. See the warranty terms of your manufacture.

What the Power Edition brings to the table is the fun of adjusting the voltage in three areas; Core, Memory and AUX without breaking the bank. The ability to just adjust those little extra things like Memory and AUX along with quite often getting slightly more voltage headroom on the core means that you're able to overclock more than the competition where only the core can be adjusted.

Combine that extra overclocking ability with the fact you're using MSIs top GPU cooler, the Twin Frozr III, and you've got a really great HD 6950 here. It's a perfect choice for people who are looking for a dual slot card that's going to overclock strong and just offer strong performance overall.

The HD 6950 2GB Twin Frozr III Power Edition is another great card from MSI and this is just a fantastic series which like the HAWK and Lightning really targets a clear market. This is one dual slot HD 6950 that people will no doubt be keeping an eye on.

yes you may be succesful unlocking your 6950 or yes you may acheive 6970 performance by OCing your 6950 but in the end you'll only have a 6950, keep in mind that you can OC your 6970 wich will lead to better performance then your OC 6950 and for 100$ more wich is kind of nothing if you can afford it will avoid the headach of a gamble unlock...

To me there is simply too much this and that and maybe and cant buy this type of card and this one may or may not and blah blah blah to buy product and try to turn it in something that it is not...

Anyway im not sure if i made my point as this is far more english then i can speak Hopefully english will be more then a 3rd language.

Just for the sake of it, here are some link of 6970 reviews... the 1st one is the big brother of the MSI TFIII

http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-ra...ghting-review/

this is the DCII froms ASUS

http://www.guru3d.com/article/asus-r...tcu-ii-review/

and here is a good comparision between 6970/6950

^^ But with both a 6950 and a 6970 overclocked to their max, you will not be limited by one whilst free with the other.

That is, if a 6950 cannot play a game smoothly at any given resolution/detail level, then a 6970 will not either.

The real world difference between the two is a matter of single-digit percentage points that equates to at most a few FPS when it counts (ie: less than 40fps or so).

For a 30% price increase (on average), this is not financially justifiable.

$100 is a LOT to some people. I'd rather spend that elsewhere personally.

The 6970 is not worth the premium to those who have budgets ...

First, thank you for giving me your opinion about this.

That's really a very good point,$100 is not little here,In my country(Argentina) 1 US dollar equals 4.30 Argentine pesos and with taxes and all that video cards are at least 100 bucks more than they are in the US,so that means I have to pay 2200 of my coin here and that is a lot of money for just computer hardware.
I buy it cause I'm lucky and I can afford it,I have the money for the 5970 but I still can't make up my mind.

I still have to buy BF3 and that's another 50 bucks so maybe I'll just go for the 5950 I'm still not sure.

get the 6950 and flash it to the 6970 and save your money. I flashed my asus 6950 2gb to a full 6970, now i run 950/1551 at stock 6970 voltage of 1.175, stays very cool and runs great 24/7.

I've read that if they are laser cut you can't unlock,If I get a 6950 I'll be getting the Sapphire one.
I'm not sure if that one will unlock.
What I think is that 6970 will last more in the future but I'm not sure about that really.
I've seen that BF3 is very demanding and I really wanna play it at the highest settings and run it smooth, but nobody can run it at ultra 1080p 30+ fps with a 6950 that's why I'm considering to get the 6970.
