Big hit with AA on in BF3?

With AA off, I can run on all HIGH settings at 1920x1200 and get 50-60 frames on all maps indoor or outdoor. But as soon as I turn on just a little AA 2x my frames tank. I get like 30-40 frames. Using 11.10 P3 drivers here as well. Anyone else get bad frames with AA on?

thats pretty much what turning on any gpu intenstive option (AA, ubersampling ect) will do. no way to really go around it, although its odd because u have 2 gigs of vram, maybe overclock ur card a bit and see if there is any inprovment, if there is, maybe run a cfx set up?

AMD usually doesn't have as much luck with AA as nVidia, but that seems only a little higher than normal, i can run the game on ultra and get a playable 35-45 fps, even while recording.

To me anything below 45 frames is unplayable. What level of AA do you have it set to? What is strange is, if I set it to the 2xMSAA it tanks. But if I leave that AA off but put on that post AA thing to low it runs just fine. My card is overclocked to the max...

To me anything below 70fps is largely unplayable. I was running medium settings before I got my second 6970 today.

just a guess based on other testing i have been doing, but using AA requires more vram. bf3 seems to be using a whole lot of shared memory which runs slower than what your vram on your card does. the extra memory being used for AA could be running not in your vram and causing a bigger hit than normal, 2xmsaa i wouldnt think should provide such a big performance hit

Try using FXAA if the game lets you. Also get MSI Afterburner up and check VRAM usage, I think you'll find that BF3 is saturating all of it with MSAA.
