although, if you do want to do this, make sure that your board can support x16/x16, or even x16/x8, but not x8/x8 because if you put that card in there, it will slow your other card down to let the physx card work.
x8/x8 really doesn't affect the overall performance vs x16/x16. i'd say at most it's a 5% difference.

A Physx card works well even in a x4 slot. See chart below.

Even if the main card needs to go down from x16 to x8, the performance loss is about 2% only while the performance gain due to the assistance of a dedicated Physx card (when playing a Physx game, of course) is much more than 2%. So, the loss is more than compensated by the benefit brought.

But fortunately, OP's GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7 does not need to make such a consideration at all.

IMHO, I would not suggest OP to actually go out and spend real cash to buy a card just for Physx purpose unless:-
a) his wallet is getting too thick to be comfortably put in his jean's back pocket or
b) the few number of Physx games (eg Batman series) are really really his type of games

Of course, the ideal situation is using an existing old card which is collecting dust in a closet.

I guess. I'll just upgrade to a 580 or something.

ill take advantage of this thread since ive been pondering this too.

I have a 9800 GT 1 GB, would that work well with my 5850?
(besides getting AMD/Nvidia set up to play well together)

Would my pcie slots drop to x8 x8 with the physx card?

you could just add another 460. that'd save you some money.
unless you have a large budget.

9800GT 1GB has 112 shaders and makes a good Physx card along with your main card HD5850. See the chart that I show in post #5.

Your mobo has two PCIex16 slots and they will go from x16/x0 to x8/x8 when 2 cards are used. However, the very slight performance loss (say, around 2-3%) of your main card due to this will be more than compensated by the performance gain due to an addition of a dedicated Physx card when you play a game with Physx (eg Mafia 2). So, just from this consideration alone, it is worth the addition.

However, my advice in my post #12 remains.
