High temps with i5? - Page 3

Thread Starter
Ok well today i reapplied a different Thermal compound "Silver" changed out the Intel brackets on my CPU Cooler and slapped it all back together. Temps are idling between 33-40c and im currently run Prime95. All cores are maxed at 100% and im not breaking 60c. Is this ok because im completely out of ideas....

It's fine for air. I would suspect you weren't getting good pressure between your HSF and your chip. You want to have the HSF really squeezing tightly against the proc or else you'll still get poor thermal transfer. Don't be afraid to crank down on whatever's holding the HSF to the backplate. You're not going to hurt the chip any.

In these cases it's usually 3 things

1) Bad mount
2) Bad thermal paste/application
3) Just a crap cooler, we all buy a lemon some time in our life

For the paste I would recommend not going cheap, if you can afford a $200 CPU then you can afford a $10-$15 paste.

I recommend Shin Etsu X23, PK-1, Phoybia Hegrese, Geild Extreme. The next two will leave permanent marks on the CPU but are very good too they are IC7 Diamond, Coollaboratry pro

All can be had for $15 and under, and I'll say again don't cheap out on paste.

As for the cooler it's not the best, so consider taking the loss and buy a new one, this time research!

I have no experience in tampering with my voltage, so if im going to do that ill need assistance. Ive reapplied my thermal compound about 10 times and im SURE that i have good contact between the Cooler and the chip. I spent 10$ on Artic silver compound so thats all set. Ive never had any heat issues with previous builds and ive used the CM N520 with them. Not saying its the best but it kept my chips cool.

Artic silver is OK, many people say there is little difference between paste, well i disagree. I had 55 idle on my 2500K after a remount and different paste 26-30 idle. That's how much a good mount and good paste changes temp.

Now what's your application method? dot in the middle? Depending on your cooler that may not be the best way to apply the paste.

check here

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=3

and experiment with different applications, I found best way is blob in the middle of the cpu & a thin, and I mean thin layer on the cooler. Read that article.

I use ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound and I saw a 2 to 5 deg temp drop on my 2500K rig and my 1090T rig.

60 degrees isn't too bad. I think my i5 reached 60 back when I used the stock HSF. Of course, I am unaware of the temp differences between the 2500k and the 750, but I think you are still within the safe zone. No need to panic.

Oh, I just noticed your update. That's quite a drastic change in temperature. Perhaps your board sensors are acting up?
