1. Windows: I've never used more than 500MB for my Windows Virtual Memory. Without Crossfire enabled this was not an issue, however for BF3 a low VMem setting results in countless crashes to the desktop due to memory errors. I increased virtual memory from 500mb to 3gb and I haven't had the CTD memory errors since.

Note: I have 8gbs of ram and 2 Radeon 6950s with 2gb of vram each but BF3 for some reason needs Virtual memory... Poor programming.

2. Download and install ATIMan Uninstaller V.6 here: http://www.mediafire.com/?76yfas13pwcnhq6

Uninstall ALL ATI software and manually uninstall CAP. Then run ATIman uninstaller.

3. After ATIman finishes wiping all your old driver data and rebooting install Catalyst 11.10 Preview 3 (Google it).

4. Install Cap4 (thanks for posting it Glycerin). http://www.rage3d.com/cap/

Note: Cap 4 is installed and seems to be working well. No issues with it.

5. I think the really important detail here is to run ATIMan uninstaller because no matter what I tried I couldn't get it working until I used ATIMan. My OS image is over 2 years old now and I've installed a ton of old Cat Drivers.

Performance Summary:

I've been playing for over 3 hours without a single crash running FRAPS. I'm running two soft modded Radeon 6950 > 6970s. Framerates with Ultra preset and 2xAA/High AAA are usually around 100 and NEVER below 60. The game looks spectacular. I'm VERY picky about frame rate or I could easily run the Ultra preset but ballistic scope is a REAL FPS whore. I'm convinced something is wrong with scope frame rates in BF3. I also think the drivers have a LOT of room for performance improvement still.

Hope this helps.

PC:
Asus P8P67pro
Core I5 2500k @ 4.4ghz
2x Radeon 6950>6970 softmod

WIndows 7 x64

Tried every single step minus a system format. Atiman uninstaller made no difference. The game simply runs sluggishly even though I get above 30 fps constantly. It is just jumpy and sluggish and doesn't feel smooth. Averaging maybe 50 fps. I have it on ultra and 4x aa on 1920 by 1200. I have to alt-tab when launching the game to make it not freeze on the opening ea/dice logos. Sometimes changing graphics settings will freeze the game of which I have to control-alt-delete to kill the task. I tried every cap. I tried every single driver/cap/no-cap combo. My system is a 24/7 stable OC at 4.0 and I have 12 gb of ram and my pagefile is managed by the OS as default. I don't have memory issues. I even tried disabling hyperthreading. The game just runs poor on a 6990. GPU-Z shows crossfire enabled and I know it is working in other games (bad company 2, crysis warhead, crysis 2). I ran out of ideas short of a new patch for the game and/or new drivers from amd. Ridiculous that AMD has had so many drivers and caps and yet my system still will not run this game properly.

Its the game not you...I have the same problems with it freezing after changing graphic options and sometimes my 2nd card will just stay idle. Other than those 2 issues the game runs smooth with very high frames on ultra.

My method for installing drivers --

* Kill all ATI-related running processes (atieclxx.exe, atiesrxx.exe, CCC.exe, MOM.exe)

* Go to "Programs and Features" and run "AMD Catalyst Install Manager" and do: "Express Uninstall All AMD Software"

* Uninstall Catalyst Application Profile and do not reboot yet

* Run Driver Sweeper, selecting the "AMD - Display" preset, clean, but don't reboot.

* Run Driver Cleaner.net 3.4.6.0 and select all ATI related entries, and select advanced cleaning. Let it run and delete files, but choose reboot later.

* Run ATIMan Uninstaller v5 using NEXT GENERATION cleaning (I just saw a link for v6 posted, but have not used it yet, not sure if any of my process will change after using the new v6)

* Manually delete any leftover ATI/AMD directories from Program Files, Program Files (x86), ProgramData, AppData\\Local, and AppData\\Roaming

* Manually delete any leftover ATI/AMD entries in registry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Wow6432Node

* Manually delete any files starting with "amd" or "ati" from Windows, Windows\\System32\\, and Windows\\Syswow64 directories

* Finally, reboot then install new Driver. Then reboot, install CAP, reboot, and done!

Most people do not have the patience to be this thorough, but I do it every single time I install new drivers and have NEVER had a problem. Maybe some of it is redundant, but it literally works every time for me though it kinda takes a while

I'm really loving the fact that the frames don't drop below 60 fps.

I'll be referring to this guide if I decide to crossfire.

Thank you for creating this thread. Subscribed.
with the latest drivers crossfired 5870s is as fast as two stock 6950s... just buy a second-hand 5870 for $150 and your golden.

I suppose this would be the best place to ask,

Since I run a 120hz monitor I want to get 120fps+ on Ultra.

Right now I have a 6970 OC + 6950 OC and I I get 90ish on Ultra. Would a second 6970 push me over the edge? Or would I need to run a 6990 + 6970 and be overkill.

6990+6970 isnt much different to 3 6950/6970. i would buy another 6950/6970 before 6990, unless your pcie lanes dictate as much

scaling does appear to be working very well in bf3 with the latest drivers for me

I will have to try this because anything I've done so far results with the same performance and crossfire not even working.

Though I have a theory that the problem does not come from graphic drivers, but perhaps MSI Afterburner interferring with Crossfire. As history has put it, AMD drivers are pretty solid and Afterburner is the little bugger.
