Need headphones, $100 budget (will buy used)

Thread Starter
My past experience with headphones is pretty limited. I used to have a pair of Bose around ear headphones that I thought were pretty good (got them as a gift). I'm currently using a Sony MDR-V600 which is also a closed headphone but the sound seems rather dull and there is a lot more leakage compared to the Bose.

Since I haven't had much experience with headphones I don't really have that much of a preference as far as open vs closed headphones goes. I'm leaning more towards a closed headphone to help lessen the outside noise though.

I will be using these headphones for everything;
50% Gaming
40% Music
10% Movies

Note: I am not a bass fanatic but I don't want a pair of dull sounding headphones.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: After further researching my options I'm a bit overwhelmed so I'm going to post a list of all the headphones I'm considering and start slimming the list down one by one.

JVC RX700 - $35
*Samson SR850 - $40* PURCHASED
*JVC RX900 - $48* PURCHASED
Sony MDR-V6 - $55
Shure SRH440 - $73

AKG K240 - $93
Audio Technica A700 - $95 not enough bass
Audio Technica ATH M50 - $99
Sennheiser HD555 - $100
Shure SRH750 - $110
Shure SRH840 - $125

Denon AHD-1100 - $125
Ultrasone HFI-580 - $135
Ultrasone HFI-680 - $139
Ultrasone HFI-780 - $145
Ultrasone Pro 550 - $145

I have the AD-700's and love them. I couldn't say anything bad about them. All open headphones are going to lack in bass though, but the soundstage is amazing. I haven't tried the other ones on your list, so I can't say good or bad about the other ones.

It'll take me a while to go through that list and pick one out for you, roadless, but like most of my posts, it's all gonna be preference again.

Major consideration number one will be whether you want open or closed phones. Mine are closed because I can't stand the sound of anything else other than what I'm doing. What's the point of headphones? However, from what I used to remember, open phones have the possibility to produce more vibrant tones? I could be wrong...

Either way, simply put the closed phones block outside sound (decently, not like you won't hear anyone yelling next to you), and open phones really just don't.

Then you pick your ear comfort fabric. My Denon's use soft leather. My old Sennheiser HD650's used some type of velvety nanofiber fabric stuff. I prefer the soft leather. Not only does it look better but it doesn't get nearly as dirty and doesn't collect hair and dandruff (which I never had, lol ^_^).

There's a few fabulous companies up there. AT makes nice phones but I'd never get them because I think they're hideous. Denon and Sennheiser, imo, are the most appealing looking phones. Sennheiser makes a ton of great models at reasonable prices too. The HD595s are one of the nicest looking pairs I've seen in a while.

I don't have time to compare specs right now, but I can definitely confirm the durability of Sennheiser. I had my HD650s for four years before they cracked in the top. Doesn't look like the Denon's will have that issue but they've only been around for a year now.

What are your top choices?

EDIT: Let me also say that the Denon's on that list look a little flimsy on the top. I definitely don't know as I don't own a pair. That model of Sennheiser has been famously popular for years (including the 595). Either way, I would take my Denon AH-D7000s over a pair of Sennheisers any day.

Just remember you're gonna need an external microphone and no matter how good of one you get, you'll still get yelled at for sounding awful. ^_^

My top choices right now are the RX900's and the DT770's but there's quite a few on the list that I haven't researched at all yet. Price is definitely playing a factor in my decision.

How would a pair of modded RX900's compare to some of the other headphones listed?

My list has been slimmed down a bit. I've been reading a lot of reviews and looking at a lot of FR graphs. I've only been able to find one FR graph HERE for the RX900 and it was very similar to the A500 also found on that site. This slightly confuses me because people say the RX900 has great bass but the A500 doesn't (well not as much).

Questions:
1) Can someone help explain the above situation?
2) Would the RX-900's benefit from an amp?
3) What budget amp would you recommend?

I had a pair of plantronics gamecomm 377 an loved them. Great audio for both gaming, music and movies. I could hear people across the map in games.
