2 things shorten the life of the die if I'm not mistaken...

1) high temps breaking the die crystal
2) High current causing eletron migration breaking down paths and moving to others causing errors then death

number 2 above never use to be a problem, only 1 above was with the larger dies. But now since the dies are so small it is increasingly a problem.
