Card recommendation for SWTOR

Thread Starter
as you know star wars the old republic is coming soon.

so im thinking whether my rig is ok for it. i want to play it in max settings, with everything, and probably in eyefinity 5000x resolution.

now, i have a 990fx mobo, a phenom ii x4 965 BE, and 2 discrete 5670s (1 gb both) in crossfire. i got 8 gig kingston 1600 mhz ram. i am doing greatly fine in a lot of existing games. (lotro, aoc etc dx10-11 max detail and eyefinity etc).

but i dont know whether i will be able to do the same in swtor.

can anyone offer me analysis/recommendations ? Ati cards only.

i'm not to sure what the recommended specs are for the upcomming swtor, but i doubt that it's going to be demanding.

However, the resolution you are going to be gaming at can cause problems with mid range cards due to the lack of vram.... your phenom ii x4 might also be slightly bottlenecking your cards, and will become more pronounce once you upgrade to a multi high end gpu setup.

If you want to stay amd.... due to budget limitations then i would stay with your cpu but overclock it as much as you can.

If not.. get a 2500k which is 180 bucks at microcenter and a BIOSTAR TP67XE which is only 125 bucks and is a very very good board (also cheap) and can accomodate sli/crossfire.

In regards to the video cards, i think moving up to 2gb 6870s should do the trick.

hope that helps

2 gb 6870s ? hmm. that would be a bit expensive. what about 1 6990 ?

budget is not a problem, and i wouldnt change from amd cpus. so cpu is also going to be amd. im also open to bulldozer if this 965 be baby cannot cope up with the added cards.

also, silence is a bit consideration for me. is it possible in ANY way that i could find silent coolers on high end cards ? i had had switched to these 5670s because sapphire had arctic coolers on them, which are quite silent.

I don't think that Star Wars will be a very gpu intensive game. Go with a 6950 if you want a bit of future proofing. Your cards should play the game anyway flawless.

1x 6990(600+ dollars) is alot more expensive than 2x2gb 6870s. (400 dollars, 200 each)

here is xfx 2gb 6870: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150563

and yes.. silent coolers would include asus dcu cards, msi twin frozr cards, basically any card that has more than one fan and non reference cooling design is meant to be more silient than stock.. however i recommend the asus dcu fans as they are the most silent, but do take up 3 slots

or an alternative is buy reference design cards and buy aftermarket coolers of your choice and replace them yourselves.

6990 is basically just two 6970s on one pcb.. basically same performance, except with power limitations and scaling differences with a single pcb.. two seperate 6970s might be slightly faster.

6970 is the fastest card right now amd/ati has.. very good choice for high res gaming since it has 2gb of vram.. actually rivals gtx 580 when going up in resolution.

In terms of price.. one of them (6970) is going to cost mid to high 300 dollar mark. One 6970 might be enough depending on how demanding swtor is going to be... it might run into problems since you are gaming @ such a high res so i would recommend getting another one just in case (will be just as much as a single 6990)

In my opinion... best value/performance goes with the 2gb6870s.. since 2x2gb 6950s would be roughly 100 dollars more than 2x2gb6870s

6950s in terms of performance are only a few fps behind 6970s... they scale great so if you have the extra 100 dollars.. they would be the best choice for performance (total is around 500 dollars for 2x2gb 6950s)

I would really wait and see how yours runs the actual game. I can say my computer with my 945 @ 3.6 and stock 4890 is pulling good fps at all on high settings with shadows off. The shadows is what is very taxing that i have noticed. Things could change but with my setup the game is very playable currently.

Hope this helps.

hm youre in beta then. these are all ok and good then, but how about doing it in eyefinity with 3 monitors ? 5000x something whatever the resolution was for that ?

so the game has a beta already?

yea as i said.. i was assuming it wasn't going to be that intensive, might be to the point where all that you need to do to max the game out is overclocking your gpus more.

EDIT: with the res you are gaming at and what stangcharger mentioned.. i think a single 2gb 6950 or 6970 should do the trick
